Alan Solomons: 'This is a major decision. It is certainly a red flag to have 19 people test positive'

Worcester boss Alan Solomons says a decision must be made “in the best interests of players, staff and families” about whether Wednesday’s delayed Gallagher Premiership game against Sale Sharks goes ahead.

The Rugby Football Union, Premiership Rugby and Public Health England are all involved in that process after 16 Sale players and three staff members tested positive for coronavirus.

The game should have taken place on Sunday, but Sale must undergo additional testing overseen by PHE and an independent audit of their track and trace processes before the match can be staged.

Solomons said: “That decision is taken purely in what is in the best interests of players, staff and families.

“This is a major decision. It is certainly a red flag to have 19 people test positive.”

Sale need a bonus-point victory over Worcester to book a Premiership play-off appointment with Wasps next weekend.

If they win without a bonus, it will be Exeter away, and should they lose, then Sale are out and Bath progress.

Warriors rugby director Solomons added: “The north of England is an area where the virus is on the increase.

“There are the circumstances there with a definitive cluster of 19 people, second wave, and they need to take a decision.

“It is their decision, and they bear the consequences of those decisions.”

Solomons continued: “We just need to get some clarity and certainty. Premiership Rugby need to make a decision, working in conjunction with the RFU and Public Health England.

“We are preparing (for the Sale game) and have done everything correctly.

“If the game is played, we will be well up for the fixture. Nobody need be concerned.

“The one thing we would never do, and I don’t believe any team in the Premiership would, is coast at this level. Every team put out gives everything.”

Alan really isn't happy, and you can see his point.

Excellent interview When you compare what he says about the health of players and their families with the clap-trap that Phil Winstanley spouted, it just shows how disingenuous Winstanley's comments are. Health and safety of players paramount? You've got to be joking. If it were, they should have called the game off straight away. I would say that if any Warriors player or member of their family become seriously ill because of the game, Winstanley should be held to account. The very last comment made by Solomons says it all.

Ooh, someone received a nasty phone call didn't they. Can't believe this has been pulled, shows the old boys club is still in full force.

Or it may be that the club are concerned that his final comment could be viewed as controversial/open to potential legal action?

Which video has been pulled?

Alan is an ex-lawyer, nothing in his last comment that could spark legal action, but certainly wouldn't make any friends at PRL, hence I can imagine that was why it was pulled. That said, he's just saying what everyone else has already said. Good that we can still watch the video on here, not sure how that works, must be downloaded onto the web server or something?

If you were a 70 years old DoR would you want to go to Sales on Wednesday ?

I wouldn’t want to go up there as a 71yr old supporter

Worcester not even mentioned on BBC rugby union weekly - all the talk was around Sale and Northampton!

Probably shouldn’t be surprised as Monye is very biased against Worcester.

Sale announce a side:

15. Luke James, 14. Denny Solomona, 13. Sam James, 12. Sam Hill, 11. Marland Yarde, 10. Robert du Preez, 9. Will Cliff; 1. Ross Harrison, 2. Cameron Neild, 3. Valerey Morozov, 4. Matt Postlethwaite, 5. Jean-Luc du Preez, 6. Jono Ross (Capt.), 7. Tom Curry, 8. Daniel du Preez.
Replacements: 16 Ewan Ashman, 17. Cal Ford, 18. Joe Jones, 19. Ewan Murphy, 20. Sam Dugdale, 21. Joe Bedlow, 22. Tom Curtis, 23. Connor Doherty.

The one that played Northampton (who now have to isolate because they've been in contact with Sale players who tested positive):
James; Van Rensburg, S James, Tuilagi, Hammersley; R Du Preez, De Klerk; Harrison, Langdon, Oosthuizen; Wiese, JL Du Preez, Ross (capt), T Curry, D Du Preez.
Replacements: Van Der Merwe, Morozov, Cooper-Woolley, Phillips, Neild, Cliff, MacGinty, Yarde.

Spot any similarities?

12 players in both squads.
How does that work when the saints squad have had to isolate?

Diamond and Sale want us to cancel.

They never will and PRL are too weak

Which means they will qualify at the expense of Bath. And maybe move to 3rd and therefore play Wasps rather than Exeter.

And we wii bring back 40 possible infected players to spread it around Worcester and Cheltenham, for which we will be blamed because we played.

Clearly Sale are pushing for Worcester to cancel and forfeit the game. Frankly as much as it would pi55 me off to give them and in particular Diamond what they want, we should put our players and staff welfare first and do the right thing. Cancel. At the end of the day it’s just a game of rugby and not worth the health of a single person. If the people associated with Sale and their decision can sleep well at night then it says an awful lot about them.

I think I'd have told our players a couple of days ago to start their holidays, but then left the cancelling of the game to the last possible moment just to annoy $ale and PRL.
