It looks like Bill Sweeney’s dream of Premiership only club rugby has come even earlier than he could have imagined.

The RFU have released a statement, here is a brief summary of the main part;

In order to provide clarity and to assist with immediate and longer term planning, the Rugby Football Union is announcing the end of the 2019/20 rugby season for all league, cup and county rugby in England. The only exception to this is the Gallagher Premiership, who we are in active discussions with to review possible best next steps.

When current government advice on social distancing measures changes, we will naturally encourage rugby training and friendlies to recommence.

I would like to personally thank everyone for their swift actions in suspending rugby activity, this is not an easy time and I know many of you will have concerns that go beyond the game.

We are working through the implications of ending the season early and have instigated a thorough process to ensure fair and balanced outcomes for the game. We will communicate these outcomes by the middle of April. While we would like to provide all the answers now, we need some time to get it right for the best interests of the game. Rest assured we are working on this as a priority and we will continue to send weekly updates to clubs.

The Prem - simply too much money at stake it would appear!! The rest of the rugby world (for the moment at least) can go and swivel!!

The reason the premiership is not included in the list of competitions is that it is owned and governed by Premiership Rugby Ltd(PRL).
"We are also responsible for all aspects of the governance, regulation, delivery and promotion of the Premiership Rugby Cup, Premiership Rugby Shield (formerly A League), the Premiership Rugby 7s and the Under 18s competition. Premiership Rugby is a private company, wholly owned by and responsible to its member clubs."
All of the other leagues are owned and governed by the RFU.
The way that things are going in the country I doubt that the outcome will be any different.

So will Saracens still be relegated do we think?

Coronavirus is beginning to impact on the premiership clubs as the lack of games hit their income streams. Gloucester, Wasps, Saracens and Worcester are asking all of their staff to take a 25% wage cut.
Although 3 of them (Saracens, Wasps and Worcester) have said that this will not apply to their lower paid staff.
I should imagine their will be similar conversations taking place in other premiership clubs over the next few weeks.
Although the season has now ended for the Championship clubs no doubt there will be tough decisions to be made when setting next seasons budget.

Probably, yes, but how knows what the RFU will some up with?

Newcastle will probably be promoted but they are not mathematically certain to finish top.

Ealing aren’t certain to finish second.
