What a disappointment after last weeks heroics!

England started badly and got worse, the early loss of Sinckler didnít help but nobody seemed to have a clue how to break down South Africa defence. I thought Ben Youngs had a shocker, and if Heinz had been fit and on the bench, he would have been substituted at halftime!

The 9 situation really came home to roost today

Youngs playing like a @#$%&, and unable to be replaced. Its not like Heinz would have been the answer in truth, as he was a last minute thought himself, but the lack of depth was brutally exposed.

Likewise Daly at fullback, with a bench containing Slade and Joseph, meaning we were powerless to change things.
Really feel if Daly hadn't won a Lions test shirt, he would be a million miles from an England one.

Losing Sinkler also hurt, and exposed Mako at scrum time. Having two ball playing props would have mixed up the threat, but left on his own, it became a very tough day at the office. Really feel Mako needs to be coming off the bench against a strong scrummaging side.

As well as EJ has done to get the team where they are, two of the above points were entirely within his remit, entirely predictable and really cost us.

Easy in hindsight, but doubt he would start that team again v South Africa.
Starting Marler, and Laws at 6, and benching Mako, Underhill and Ford would likely have seen us better able to withstand the onslaught, but the performance last week was perversely almost too good to allow him to do that.

South Africa blew us away, and would have done whatever side we fielded today I feel, but there are going to be some regrets there, that we and particularly EJ blew it on the biggest stage.

On the day we lost to the better team but I concur with fatherlice about team selection. Its time now to clear out some of the old brigade including the aforementioned and bring in a new dynamic squad of players. Sorry for the those forwards in the team today but too may are past their best. We need to look right across the league not just Sarries and Leicester.

Thing is no one criticised EJ `s team selection last week?!
Funny that.
We were beaten by a much better team on the day.

I agree..... Everyone was praising the same team last week.
Better team won on the day..... 2 or 3 shocking displays today..... Boks had a game plan that worked, England's scrum was atrocious, Boks defence was awesome..... In truth we had no answer or clue how to break em down.
Can't blame EJ really...... If at the start we were told we would reach the Final we would have bitten the hand..... Couple that with the fact mant had tipped SA to win it.
Next chapter...... France 2023

I'm bitterly dissapointed but the better team won on the day. And that is it - on the day.
Hindsight views can pick selection, tactics & performance down to the bare bones but in the end SA had it worked out and beat us fair and square.
Ah well, Engand are the best team in the NH and we beat the posing dancers.

Just a farm team from Devon.

Sorry to post on your forum, but exactly which Sarries player would you not have in the squad?

I feel for the side today and was not surprised we lost in truth.
The emotional and physical stress of beating the ABs last week was huge and after such a high it was always going to be immensely difficult to back that up a week later.
I don't honestly believe that anyone could be dropped after last week BUT some were obviously carrying knocks.
The Sinckler injury was bad luck and really threw plans there up in the air.
Daly isnt a full back and was all at sea. He just doesn't command his space and I hope that is given up on now. The Boks are not the first team to make him look very average defensively. He won't be playing full back for Sarries (and if for some strange he does he will be a big chink in their armour and good news for everyone else).
Young's looked like a rabbit caught in headlights and should have been hauled but in truth not one player could honestly say they performed anywhere near their best.
They have all played a lot of minutes and it showed, especially Billy V looked spent and without him on form there is little in heavy carrying options.
They looked knackered and there was no clear thought process.
All of this with England having an extra recovery day.
All of EJs tactics unravelled today and really bit him and us on the bum

For me the biggest blunder on Eddies part was the very thing people picked up about his selection when he picked the squad, that was only picking two tightheads in the squad.

For me personally the biggest shift of momentum for England was Sinkler going off, from there is was downhill..

As Dan Cole for all his positives is not an 80 minute player and I said to the company I was watching the game with that had the game gone past 80 minutes Cole would have been dead weight on the pitch and picked apart by the fresher Bok pack.. Turns out that happened before the 80 minute mark as he also gave away more penalties than any other England player today.
