Premiership pay cut requests
FalcDancer 19 March, 2020 23:29
Most if not all rugby social media outlets are reporting from ‘sources’ that upto 7 Premiership clubs are asking players to take a 25% pay cuts to avoid redundancies

Playing devils advocate here -
1. Times are hard in the current climate with the ongoing global issues. No games to generate income etc
2. I thought each club received £10m+ each from CVC buyout of Premier Rugby shares? This should more than see clubs through

FD. Make no mistake, the situation is very serious indeed for clubs. As it is for lots of businesses, of course.

Just like your local pub, cafe, independent shop, any business that is relying on footfall is living a precarious existence.

Obviously games being postponed will be costing clubs heavily, but I expect the RPA will be asking hard questions about why the CVC money isn't covering wages.

CVC money isn't for wages and in return CVC is taking a significant slice of clubs' income.

This is a catch 22 situation, an exceptional situation that you can’t plan for

Players have contracts that should be honoured. They have financial obligations like everyone else based upon their level of income
On the other hand the clubs will struggle whilst their income is reduced and players could defer income until the game picks up again to alleviate the pressure on the clubs finance

However, ideally the CVC money should be spent on progressing the game through infrastructure. Unless bills are paid there won’t be a game as the clubs will fold

So the question is - do the players take responsibility for the clubs financial issues or do the clubs use the balance of their bank accounts to stay afloat ?

This is a mirror image of life

My middle daughter is now on half pay.

I have every sympathy with everyone suffering and suggest they do as much as they can to ensure they are still employed on the other side of this

The CVC money has probably been, in the main, squandered on servicing debt or paying for expensive Antipodeans / Safricans / Other non English or English players.

It’s incredibly hard asking a player who may be on relatively high pay to give up some of that pay because their expenses e.g. mortgage will rise with their salaries.

However, they like huge swathes of the population are going to be employed by organisations big and small suffering crippling cash flow problems who will have to make some incredibly hard and potentially unpopular decisions.

The whole situation is like the balancing act from hell; isolate people to prevent the spread, risk serious mental health issues due to isolation and be left with an economy facing Armageddon. I really don’t envy those in power.

Maybe not the time to ask but how can Glaws’ wage bill be £1m a month when the SC is £7m?!!

Re: Premiership pay cut requests
markismith50 20 March, 2020 18:56
Salary cap is just for players and has lots of exemptions and allowances above 7M

At least Glaws have been saving on win bonuses this season.

Tigers have stated that their match day losses are £300-£400k. This must be at the top end for prem rugby?

My only query is that many large businesses have business interruption insurance.

Now this is not the case for self employed or small pubs and shops as they can't afford it and it is perhaps better (unfortunately) to fold in extreme circumstances.

I would be sure that most companies with a 3/400k match day turnover will have been advised to take this.

Therefore the cynic in me thinks there will be some (not all) lining their pockets at other's good will gestures....

25,849 capacity, not far off sold out each home game, soon adds up.

Kwa. Insurance doesn’t cover that.

I don't know of anybody who has business interruption insurance to cover this type of event. Commercial insurance includes business interruption for the likes of having no water, no electricity, no access etc for sustained periods of time. It does not include natural events such as this.

Danny Care has been in the bbc podcast to say the Quinn’s players have agreed to a pay cut from April onwards.

He said players did ask if this was a league or a club thing.

Only Exeter of the 13 Prem shareholders have not asked for pay cuts yet.
