Just the first of many I fear

Shearings Holidays owner Specialist Leisure Group has entered into administration after failing to secure a rescue deal.

As well as 117-year-old Shearings, Specialist Leisure Group was behind agency Wallace Arnold Travel, National Holidays, UKBreakaways, Caledonian Travel , Sportingbreaks.com, Bay Hotels, Coast & Country Hotels and Country Living Hotels.

With the current travel restrictions in place as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, there were only a “small number” of customers overseas on package holidays, the Civil Aviation Authority said.

However, the company had more than 64,000 bookings – the majority coach package holidays – Abta said, confirming they would be financially protected with customers due a full refund.

Local impact as they own The George at Chollerford.
The hospitality sector is taking a massive hit and has to be of some concern when our owner is in that business

And the Eden Arms Hotel, Rushyford. Hotels might bounce back if they are allowed to open in July and people can't go abroad. Coaches more problematic.

I have a soft spot for The George as a couple of years ago I was driving over for a match on a Sunday morning, the A69 was closed so I was following the Military Road, and my car overheated just as I got into Chollerford. I nursed it into the George's car park and went in while it cooled down, the staff were really friendly and helpful as I gave Baby L her breakfast and had a Coke myself to steady me nerves. Lovely place and surely someone will pick it up and keep it going once the crisis is over.

Love that neck of the woods and fondly remember The George featuring in an episode of The Likely Lads

The George was a regular stopping off point in the days when I drove to the Lake District every weekend to knock off all the summits. I also spent a couple of weekends there. Pretty confident that somebody will take it on.
