Lack of front row

Please excuse the intrusion into your board from a Saint but I've been struggling to find something out. I remember that a while back Falcons were forced to play a European game without bench cover for (for TH I think) despite having someone available that hadn't been registered for European competition. Was that correct and was there any sanction for not starting with full front row bench cover?

As you may know Saints are still waiting to hear back from EPCR whether we can register another loosehead for Sunday given we're down to just one (who is a 19 year old who made his debut against Tigers on Sunday just gone). We're not sure who had been lined up if given the go ahead but there's no guaranteed it will be allowed.

Ps. You haven't got a loosehead we can borrow for a few weeks have you?

Yes, thatís correct. We had no bench tight head at Edinburgh due to EPCR regs not allowing us to register one during an injury crisis (we had a fit, fully contracted player at Murrayfield ready to play, but they wouldnít budge).

No, there was no punishment, as we hadnít broken any rules.

I may be wrong but am sure it was against Edinburgh at Murrayfield and we werenít allowed to register anyone else. As it was Lockwood played on the wrong side and our scrum got suitably destroyed (good on him for trying however). May be further wrong but am sure he got yellow carded for scrum infringements and sadly for him after being eventually substituted he had to come back on due to an injury. I ofcourse could be talking complete horsefall, I had been in the pub pre game with my sonís girlfriendís dad!

The gist is we werenít allowed to register anyone else, to cut a long story short.

Edit: sorry, Smithyís much better explanation was posted as I posted!

Thanks for clarifying both, for some reason I had it in my head that it was a regulation to field three specialist front rowers on the bench (presumably to reduce the chance of uncontested scrums).

I suppose the question would have been if Falcons had declared Lockwood unable to move across to the other side?

I suspect we're about to see Franks try to play loosehead, get carded and finish another game with 14 (or fewer!) on the field.

Thanks gents.

iirc when he got carded we were forced to declare uncontested scrums and play with 13

It was still a decent game. Were we not winning at half time? It was certainly close, anyway, from memory.

Yes Smithy. We were winning at HT in both home and away games with Edinburgh

If I remember correctly it wasnít just a bench tight head we were short of, we didnít have a starting TH which was why Sam started the game there.

Sam was the starting tight head (yes, heís normally a loose head, but he volunteered). Sami Mavinga also had a bit of a go there.

Believe Iíve just seen Saints been granted to register another player from Gloucester i think for the game.

Brings up the question of why werenít we granted the same? Ludicrous.

Itís the right decision, but does add to the frustration around our own incident.

Indeed. Just because someone made a stupid decision in the past doesn't mean to say everyone else needs to make the same stupid decision just to be consistently stupid!

You clearly don't understand how the Civil Service works.
