From the Club's website today:

England internationals Joe Launchbury, Brad Shields, Dan Robson and Jacob Umaga are among 15 Wasps players who have signed new long-term contracts as the Club plans for the future and looks to build a platform for sustained success.

Other first-team players committing their futures to the Black and Golds include Italy international Matteo Minozzi, along with Academy products Gabriel Oghre, Tom Willis, Will Porter and Sam Spink.

Zach Kibirige - who joined Wasps from Newcastle Falcons in 2018 - has also extended his time at the Club.

Despite only recently committing their futures to Wasps, the Club are delighted that Thomas Young, Jack Willis, Tom West and Sam Wolstenholme have taken up options to further extend their deals. The Club has also handed a new long-term deal to Alfie Barbeary, who was recently promoted to the 1st team squad from the Academy.

The new contracts are in addition to deals recently announced for Jimmy Gopperth, Marcus Watson, Rob Miller and Biyi Alo, along with the signings of Ryan Mills and Myles Edwards.

Wasps Head Coach Lee Blackett said: ďIím delighted to see so many of our existing players committing their futures to the Club.

ďWe are working hard to develop a brand of winning rugby that gets supporters off their seats and having a nucleus of international experience to help bring through some of our younger players is going to be key in achieving this.

ďThe squad was really beginning to show glimpses of its true potential prior to the lockdown with three wins on the spin and itís brilliant that we have been able to retain so much talent so we have a strong base and can plan for the next few years with a level of certainty.

ďThese have been challenging times for everybody, and Iím really proud of the way that the players have conducted themselves.

ďNow we are fully focused on preparing for the restart of the season and a strong finish to this campaign and fulfilling the potential this squad has.Ē

So, more to the point...who hasnít been extended?
Or who has decided that this season is their last?

Some players had already extended last season, so contracts aren't up until end of 2020/21.

Cruse, Bassett, Lima, Gaskell, Si Mac and Brookes spring to mind. Cruse been linked with a move away for a while. Can see Lima taking a pay day in Japan or going back to NZ. Do we want to give Gaskell and Si Mac extended contracts bearing in mind their injury history. Would be disappointed if Bassett and Brookes moved on.

Still hasnít taken that niggle away of letting Nizaam Carr go, especially when he was settled and performing well, hopefully we hit the ground running and itís easier to take

It came down to money - we could not afford him in the current climate.

Great work - very pleased to see Shields sign we are going to need him firing fully with Carr and Ash going. Fantastic news on some very key players and great to see Launch signing for long term.

The first post after the announcement is about who hasnít signed rather than celebrating who has ...... that could perhaps be seen as negative..... clearly you donít see it as such .... no problem.

Brookes was one of the players I was referring to who extended last season (extra two years). Granted I have this might not be valid in sport's current post-Covid finance era.

Really pleased by this, with all the previous signings we seem to, at last, started on the road to long term sustainability with the greatest chance of success on the pitch. I have previously commented over the years that success needs a squad that has little turnover of ins and outs, a settled squad, a smattering of new but key players and an academy that is successful and conveyer belting talent into the senior squad every year. This year is the first time since our move that these elements have come to fruition.

According to reports I found:
Bassett signed long term contract last season
Also signed or re-signed 2019 were Harris, McIntyre, ZZ, Cruse, Taylor, Brookes, Owlett, Toomaga-Allen, Cardall, Gaskell, Vukansinivic, Morris, Vailanu. Vellacott, Fekitoa, Odoguwu, Sirker.
2018 signatures were Rowlands and Lima
2017 was De Jongh, who is 32 now.

Everyone else signed up for next season if not in the 15 long term set, who are predominantly young.

Good work in digging back. I suppose the 2019s could be until 2021 unless longer term but long term then doesn't involve the financial schenanigans associated with the salary cap that the current batch do.

Re: Good News
Mellie 16 July, 2020 15:48
My assumption is that all 2019 contracts cover at least next season with Bassett at least a year longer. We know Lima's finishes after next season and presumably Rowlands' will as well and he's keeping his options open. Likelihood is that JdJ will finish end of next season too.

I'd expect most 2020 contracts to be 2 seasons with those 15 reported as long term at least another year more, though Jimmy may only have 1 year given his age.

The only players over 30 at the start of next season will be:
30 Kieran Brookes, James Gaskell, Mike le Borgeouis
31 Ben Harris, Tom Cruse, Rob Miller
32 Juan de Jongh
37 Jimmy Gopperth

20 of the squad will be 25 or under.
