Rumoured to be coming to us

Not sure how I feel about that. Obviously a classy player but he's getting on a bit now and I feel there are more pressing areas that we should be looking to improve. He would be a good mentor to our young back 3 lads though

Re: Nick Abendanon
GHA 02 March, 2020 20:48
He was good a while ago, not so much any more

I hope we don't sign players because they'd be good mentors

Re: Nick Abendanon

Still class

Re: Nick Abendanon
Margin_Walker 02 March, 2020 21:31
Will be 34 at the start of next season. Could work for a year or two, but that's pushing it age wise for an outside back.

Re: Nick Abendanon
GHA 02 March, 2020 21:44
Sounds like Clermont don't want him any more

Feels like an over the hill player coming for a final payday to be honest

He's capped though so he'll help you get to 20

Re: Nick Abendanon
SirBurger 02 March, 2020 22:33
At the start of the season we were bemoaning our options at 15. I would be very happy with him providing some experience whilst Parton continues to develop his game.

As SirBurger said, I can see us looking at an experienced full back for a season or two to help our young back three 0layers develop. He's unlikely to be cheap but given it's probably his last contract it is unlikely to break the bank.

Re: Nick Abendanon
shimmieandshake 03 March, 2020 08:07
I'd prefer to let Parton come through and sign a (less proven) Liam Williams type wing/full-back in their mid-to-late twenties to mentor and compete.

Given Abendanon's expected wages, think we'd get more value elsewhere.

Devil's advocate but some people would argue a player's last contract is usually his one last big payday (Sean O'Brien is an example)

I personally prefer players who can play and make an impact and win the personal battles etc etc rather than this theory that they can help youngsters develop. That's what the coaches are for. Abendanon might be a bit of a loner who keeps himself to himself and has no interest in coaching whatsoever, for example. Danny Cipriani is one year younger than Abendanon (so 33 next season) - I'd have him at the Irish for his quality on the pitch rather than the fact he could be a mentor to youngsters...

I might be doing Abendanon a disservice here, not really sure what his stats are like at Clermont over the past two or three seasons, but it's good to stimulate debate!

Re: Nick Abendanon
tatthecraic2 03 March, 2020 10:39
hes been a very good player in Franace, I think one year he was player of the season / near to getting it. no doubt he's very good...

but he's not got long left in his playing years. I'd like a player who will do 4-5 years with us.

a gem like Blair Cowan has been for us. although gems like that are rare for us.

Re: Nick Abendanon
GHA 03 March, 2020 11:03
He won European Player of the Year in 2015, although obviously him and Steff weren't 'exceptional' enough to be called up for England despite playing abroad

Re: Nick Abendanon
Nick4219 03 March, 2020 15:35
Not sure we need to use up cap room for him. He’s a good player but I feel he’s going to be too expensive for too little a return.

We have Parton, Loader, Jackson, Veitokani and Stokes who can play 15 and can further develop this season so I can’t see the logic behind this one.

Dont know their contract arrangements but surely V and Stokes will be on their way out? Stokes was just cover and V seems to never be picked

Not sure re contract lengths, but, Stokes has improved every game and may well end up a great pick and could be handy going in to the next season and would be relatively cheap? Would free up salary for bigger needs.

Great player but would be mega bucks! Now Parton is back I would hope to see him push on for the rest of this season and be a force next year.

Just read on the BBC that it was down to a disagreement between CA and the whole coaching staff at Sale.
My point of view, Ashton is the guy who recently said even though he was part of the Sarries Arthur Daily payment schemes he had no idea of anything untoward ......yeah

He does have a very interesting take on it from listening to his view on the BBC podcast.

Sale have some pretty big names coming in and they must be right up at the salary cap which could explain his release. I’m sure if he’s on the podcast soon, Danny Care and Ugo Monye will ask him about it, they are normally pretty upfront and direct with some of the questions.

Re: Nick Abendanon
LI Bohemian 03 March, 2020 20:39
Diamond states it is not a salary cap issue, but they have enough puff in the wing department to not miss him.
Rumour is he is linked with quins, so expect plenty of gushing in the podcast.

Nick Abendanon has been mentioned by Fissler in today’s TRP as being a possible signing till the end of the season.

Odd short term cover IMO unless it might be with half-an-eye on a full-term contract for next season?... Still a class player though.

Re: Nick Abendanon

Hi plzd, how's the Quins board?

How do you define 'exceptional circumstances' exactly?

Re: Nick Abendanon
Shawshank 21 May, 2020 08:30
GHA - you could imagine a scenario that in the week leading up to a 6N match a nasty dose of flu ran through the England squad, and we were left with say no fit hooker or scrum-half in the squad, and the next 2 in line were also out of their club teams injured.

If say Jamie George or Danny Care were then plying their trade in France, then that's probably exceptional circs to call them up.

Re: Nick Abendanon
GHA 21 May, 2020 08:56
Agreed, Shawshank. But at the same time I think 'exceptional circumstances' is vague enough that if the powers-that-be had wanted to they could've found a way to bring European Players of the Year in. I understand that they don't want to set a precedent but if exceptional circumstances included a clause stating 'unless you are European Player of the Year' they'd cover themselves pretty well. In your example let's say that there were three hookers / 9s in the squad out injured, followed by two club players. The sixth choice domestic-based player would be pretty annoyed.

That's how I would've done it anyway. Because the fact Steffon (three Heineken Cups, one Top 14 Championship) only won 5 England caps borders on criminal.

Re: Nick Abendanon
Shawshank 21 May, 2020 09:08
Agree about Steff GHA, but he knew the rules when he left us.

Be interesting to find out from Steff whether he would have swapped all his Euro triumphs and medals with Toulon for, say, getting another England 30 caps..?

Not sure I would have done...

Re: Nick Abendanon
GHA 21 May, 2020 09:49
Sure, but those rules could be manipulated. I'm not saying Steff could or should've done anything different, I'm saying if I was an RFU bigwig or coach bigwig or something I would've found a way to get him in the team (Sm60)
