The good, the bad, and the frenetic

Gentlemen, I present for your amusement the 1970 England v Wales match.

If you have a spare 15 minutes it is a good and really interesting game.

The good - absolutely no time wasted at scrums and lineouts. The backs were whippets, and the forwards were certainly no bigger than current backs.

The bad - loads of high tackles, unpunished knock forwards, toe punts at conversions

The frenetic - the pace was relentless, and they played much more continuous rugby that happens now.

Even had a penalty for a crooked put-in at the scrum!!

The line outs were a complete lottery and you could have driven a bus down the tunnel at the scrums. Itís also striking how unstructured the play seemed to be - no dummy runners, you just ran with the ball and hoped that your mate was next to you for the pass.

And more often than not, he was.

A significant amount of flexibility regarding knock ons.

And no messing about getting the ball away from breakdowns. Long, quick and largely accurate passes.
