Premiership club on the brink?
SixNineOne 01 May, 2020 18:47
Iíve seen several comments in the press recently to the effect that there is one club that is likely to go under if the current season is cancelled and the TV revenues are lost. Does anyone have any insight as to the identity of said club?

I'm sure that Shawshank recently posted a link to inews.co.uk which reported that it was Newcastle Falcons under threat.

Wasps definitely seemed to be struggling somewhat even before the lockdown...

A few weeks back Mick Crossan was talking (in Rugby Pass) about maybe this crisis knocking some sense into runaway costs in the Premiership. I agree with him, and think this will be a bit of a reality check.

Please let it be Saracens.

That sounds like a dictionary definition of 'wishful thinking'. In reality, all that Saracens have to do is to stick to the salary cap, then they'd be rolling in it.

It certainly is wishful thinking and they are already rolling in it. They have rolling in what you find at the bottom of pigsties for at least six years. It's what has been stinking out the Premiership.

Mackem - I read on the BBC site that Falcons were in bad trouble, and their owner Mr Kurdi had used all the CCV money to pay off his loans.

My guess however is that they are talking about a current GP team, and Iíd agree with EC that itís either Wuss or Wasps, prob Wasps as the fixed costs of their huge facility in Coventry must be massive, and they must have easily the highest such overheads in the league.

I wouldnít like to be one of their 2022 bond holders right now..

If Wasps folded then there would be a spare place in the GP. No chance of Sarries being reprieved, so Iíd guess Ealing would come up with Falcons.

If Wasps/Wuss folded I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sarries did get a reprieve. It would leave 12 Prem shareholders and if Sarries were let off the hook it would mean those 12 teams were in the Premiership, i.e. the perfect time/excuse to ring fence.

.

My apologies Shawshank. I remember now why I got confused. The thread was "Newcastle confirmed for promotion" and it was Ruckinggood who posted the link to inews. You observed:
"You would think that Hugh Godwin should know that Kingston Park is an artificial pitch...(Sm141)" This because Godwin stated that the groundsman was going in to cut the grass!

Yes but that doesn't make them a Premiership club this season does it?

Been told, pretty categorically from people who should know, that we'll survive (no one will thrive) and we've announced new/extended current coaches today. Couple player announcements to come as well.

Falcons can't be in a good place right now. Season cancelled, lower funds in Champ, etc.

Indeed you are correct.

Was a bit of a relief to me, I must admit. Feared the worst...

looking at the wasps forum they are saying that a payment is due in June of in excess of £1 million to the bond holders and each bond is trading at 44 down from 100 with no income could pose great difficulty for them.

Some broadcasting politics at play here.

BT's rights deal runs out end of 2020/21 season. There had been quite a bit of talk about how Sky were looking to take over the entire 6N rugby rights, both Internationally and the GP (and Pro14) which would have been a pretty big blow to BT.

So BT earn lots of credit with the GP clubs for sticking by them, and (you would suspect) the clubs will be sensible and sign a new deal with them PDQ.
