Thatís a pretty inexperienced line up. Letís hope for both teamsí sake that he puts in a better performance than Ian Tempest and doesnít niggle the game to death.

I know you have to start your Premiership Rugby career as a ref somewhere, but why us? Have they decided that games for the "lesser" sides have little or no bearing on the league standings and they can use these games as learning experience? It will be very interesting to see Smales' style of reffing. I just hope he's not another Tempest, but a younger JPD(Sm63)

Itís interesting that they put Smales with a couple of inexperienced ARs. Iíd have expected a more experienced head running the line to provide a bit of support to a debutant. I was also surprised to see that this weekend Ian Tempest will be refereeing his 72nd GP match and Tom Foley doing his 80th. I used to think Foley was a bit unreliable but Iím happy to admit that he has improved significantly over the last couple of seasons. Iím just disappointed that Ian Tempest has signally failed to improve despite a near equivalent number of games...

If only the RFU would give Wayne Barnes ( or somebody with similair knowledge ) the job of retraining the likes of Tempest and Co on scrum management. Not sending props off when the scrum is serially failing, just give the penalty try and move on. How on earth does Ian T think the next scrum will be any better if the other team have got scrum dominance (it beggars belief) and the replacement prop is even less experienced. Rant over.

What most referees seem to forget is that there is nothing illegal in being pushed backwards, as long as you stay down and keep your bind. Too many penalties are given erroniously and prematurely. it would be good to see that once the ball gets to the feet of the 8, the ref says "Use It", if nothing illegal has occurred. Too many sides milking penalties, then the kick to the corner and the inevitable catch and drive, It's so boring. If there were fewer scrum penalties, perhaps we might see some skillful forwards, rather than the huge, slow, behemoths that seem to populate some front rows.(Sm63)
