Top 3 Overseas LI Signings
Shawshank 08 September, 2020 10:52
Allowing for longevity, quality and overall contribution I'd say:

1. Tagi
2. Maps
3. Blair

On quality alone James O'Connor is up there. Hard to disagree with the top three based on your criteria though Shankers

Maps would be my top. Riki Flutey would be in there. Phil Murphy too.

Tags just just a bit below the others as he started great but, IIRC, he faded a fair bit after his arm break.

100% agree, JOC was an absolute class act but obviously doesn't fit the longevity criteria.

Therefore I would go for:

1. Maps
2. Tagi
3. Dermody / Rautenbach as a prop pairing.

Since technically LI is an English club and Ireland is 'overseas', here goes...

Brendan Venter
Conor O'Shea
Bob Casey
Sailala Mapusua
Faan Rautenbach
Ryan Strudwick
Jarrod Cunningham
Naka Drotske
Danie Coetzee

Would all be contenders IMHO

Maps, obviously first
Blair not far behind
and then Faan Rautenbach

with honourable mentions to

Tags, Stowers, Treviranus, Dermody, Halani Aulika (the Tongan Tank) and Chris Hala'Ufia.

We've had more good'uns than wrong'uns over the years despite the current moans from some quarters(Sm63)

Matt Keenan has to be up there as well. Remember him doing an Andy Haden on Martin Bayfield at the Avenue and he was about 10 inches shorter than Bayfield!

How about everyone's thoughts on the best foreign 15 plus the bench?
That'll start a few arguments(Sm63)

Don't I wish that 23 would be available for Sunday

Coleman
Botha
Cowan
Magne
Tuisue
Van Zyl
Jackson
Tagi
Rona

Bit ropey. Some positions not the best but suppose the best "non eng' players maybe

Not too sure about that front row.

Ignoring the Dermody at hooker idea, it depends whether this selection has Aulika in his try scoring season or Aulika in the rest of his seasons when he was not much more than a penalty conceding machine

I’m getting my Dermody mixed up with Coetzee!

Kevin Putt was the best 9 I saw play, particularly in tandem with Stephen Bachop. I was there at Welford road, many years ago, when he was so good that Austin Healey felt the need to stamp on his head and and his defence was " he must have head-butted my foot, your honour. He still got a lenghty ban and is an unreliable witness to this day.

Does Awesome Dawson count as ‘overseas’? Must be a better selection than Magne, who whilst be great for France was next to useless for us.

And as for MW’s selection of the Show-Pony...? Even the blessed Pieter would get in my selection ahead of him...(Sm100)

Depends on viewpoint. When I think "foreign" in rugby, I think "outside the home nations". Using that criteria:

1) Mapusua
2) Cowan
3) Tagicakibau

Honourable mentions to Rautenbach (best scrummager we've ever had), Dermody, Trev and Hewat.

As for a full 15 (using same criteria)

15 Hewat
14 Staniforth
13 Elvis
12 Mapusua
11 Tagicakibau
10 Flutey
9 Martens

8 Halu'ufia
7 Cowan
6 Trev
5 Strudwick
4 Coleman
3 Rautenbach
2 Coetzee
1 Dermody

Brendan Venter by a country mile, only time we've won anything folks!

Honourable shouts for the incredible Jake Boer, probably the most startling player I've seen in our shirt, and the great clubman Ryan Strudwick

My all-time non British Isles XV

1. Clarke Dermody
2. Naka Drotske
3. Simon Halford
4. Matt Keenan
5. Ryan Strudwick
6. Juan Manuel Leguizamón
7. Jake Boer
8. Chris Hala'ufia

9. Junior Tonu'u
10. Steve Bachop
11. Sailosi Tagicakibau
12. The Doc - captain
13. Elvis Seveali'i
14. Scott Staniforth
15. Jarrod Cunningham - kicker

I'd argue reaching the Premiership Final, Heineken semi and Challenge Cup Final in four seasons is more of an achievement than winning one Anglo-Welsh Cup, even if we lost all three! And to not have Maps shoe-horned into anywhere into your 15 is a bit bananas

C'mon Shawshank, we did eventually beat Wasps that day. And I think that day at The Stoop he had Zinzan Brooke whispering in his ear "Go on Geezer, even I could slot one from here."

Nope, winning is everything in sport, not being good runners-up. No doubting Maps but he was surrounded by better players whereas The Doc totally transformed the team with his freakish mentality and desire to win

Re: Top 3 Overseas LI Signings

Winning is everything but I'd rather win all our league games than all our pre-season friendlies

Re: Top 3 Overseas LI Signings

Mackem - Geezer deffo had the worst handling I've ever seen in a pro rugby player.

The Wasps incident was just the cherry on top...

A slight aside, but just watched the highlights of the Heineken Cup semi-final from 2008 and a lot of the players mentioned in this thread are playing.
