wot no Lamby? *

Good idea tedge, are we looking at the best players who have been here (including potential) or those who have delivered consistently? and just choose best in position or combinations important (eg Flash & Fodes together were way more than ever separately)? or just get on with it smiling smiley

I will be picking the Wales and Lions world class 10

Me to WP.
I think Rob Horne should automatically be put at 13 as he paid the ultimate price for playing for Saints.

Re: Saints Team of the Decade
shendy 02 December, 2019 21:53
Here's mine - I think the pack is pretty much self-selecting
1 Tonga'uiha 2 Hartley 3 Mujati
4 Lawes 5 Day
6 Dowson 8 Manoa 7 Wood

9 Reinach 10 Biggar
12 Hutchinson 13 G Pisi
11 Naiyaravoro 15 Foden 14 Ashton

I reckon that's a 15 that would scare quite a few teams.

(Bench - Haywood, A Waller, S Ma'afu, Gibson, Picamoles, Dickson, Myler, Reihana)
Reserve tight-head was the hardest call - perhaps should be Paul Hill, but Tommy V didn't ask for the bench and y'know, that punch...

SaintMaul 03 December, 2019 00:04
1 Tiny
2 Dylan
3 Mooj
4 Lawes
5 Kruger
6 Manoa
7 Wood
8 Picamoles
9 Fotuali'i
10 Biggar
11 Big T
12 Francis
13 Hutchinson
14 Ashton
15 Bruce

Only 7 and 12 made me ponder. Is Tom the most natural 7. Possibly not. But I'm not leaving out the guy who scored that try with that celebration. At 12 I was sorely tempted to go with Downey as he was my favourite 12 in the last decade. Just brilliant at what he did well. But his game and limitations wouldn't suit that team and it's a team selection.

Then there's the question of who would be the DoR: Jim or Chris....

It depends if you are looking at the players status in the game or their actual performances in the bg&g.

Re: Saints Team of the Decade

This is really difficult. Front 3 seems to be set in stone, granite to be precise, we have been blessed with players in the last 10 years but I note some omissions from what has already been posted.

Andy Blowers, Corne Krigge, Robbie....*

Re: Saints Team of the Decade

When was Blowers with us?

Re: Saints Team of the Decade
Awaywin 03 December, 2019 12:21
Roger Wilson, Samu Manoa or Louis Picamoles at 8 what a nice dilemma to have

Re: Saints Team of the Decade
ajack 03 December, 2019 12:39
Always impossible to pick without a very specific criteria IMO. Just a few names that never let Saints down but I have not seen mentioned. Nacho Lobbe, Neil Best, Jon Clarke and James Downey. I had actually forgotten Euan Murray and Dan Vickerman played for us, more to do with my memory than their performances.

Agree. Victor Matfield is case in point - one of the greatest locks ever to play the game, but had one season here when we weren't great.

To answer my own question, Blowers only played for us between 2001 and 2005, so isn't eligible for this. How can it be that long ago???
[en.wikipedia.org]

Euan Murray just squeaks in - played with us until 2010. But I'd still have Mooj.

Nothing against Dan or Stephen but King Carlos at 10. Just picture him today with our youthful backline. Incredible entertainment.

Gotta play by the rules - team of the decade 2010-2019. Carlos finished with us in 2009.

Good thought Shendy, it is quite scary how quickly time has passed.

I was pretty shocked to find out how long ago Andrew Blowers played for us!

Re: Saints Team of the Decade

Surely the last decade going back from 2019 would include 2009 or is my maths incorrect?

Re: Saints Team of the Decade
shendy 03 December, 2019 21:42
If you go on calendar years, Jan 2010 to Dec 2019 is 10.

Re: Saints Team of the Decade
ThornbySaint 03 December, 2019 21:57
The Chronicle’s article states

“ The only criteria is that every member of your team must have played in at least one competitive match between January 1, 2010 and the present day.”

So irrespective of whose maths is correct, that pretty much answers it

The number of Englishmen in the teams named above range from a low of 5 to a high of 8 out of 15.

Given how much Boyd has gotten out of the English youngsters, it got me wondering what Boyd would have done with the likes of Stephenson, Packman, Hooley, Hobbs-Awoyemi etc

I’d add Nutters to that list - if only he’d had an opportunity under Boydy. Woody is probably playing some of the best rugby we’ve seen from him however how dynamic would a back row of Nuts, Ludders and Little T be?

Re: Saints Team of the Decade

I tweeted my team with everyone's twitter handles, and Mooj has replied - he said he'd put himself on the bench behind Chris Budgen, bless him, but acknowledged that it looked "a decent side".
