Champs Cup permutations

Inevitably we are all going to be scratching our heads this weekend to work out what Saints need to do to get in to the quarters. BBC have put an article up explaining everything.

Essentially, we need to win preferably with a TBP. We also need either one of Gloucester or Sarries to lose. If both do, and we win, we go away to likely Racing. If one loses and we win, we go out in the quarters after losing to Leinster again*.

If we lose then we have some spare weekends to do the gardening.

Gloucester are away to Toulouse, who are very much in the mix for a hone q/f, so hopefully our old French friends can do us a favour.
Sorry Glaws, but needs must!

I'm not sure that asterisk is at all necessary FHS!

Its all part of Boyd's master plan. Get thumped home and away in the groups. Lull them into a false sense of security then we really turn up in the 1/4 finals.

Next stop semi finals!*

Would really rather have a an away quarter final and potentially get thumped? Or a weekend off?

I think either Racing or Leinster away is a mighty ask barring massive injury crisis from the 6Nations

Toulouse are a very good side, bookies say they win by 14 against Glaws. Will probably be closer because Glaws keep playing for 80 mins but Cipriani is now out - maybe not a bad thing and heís been patchy this year. Williams might provide a little more field position.

Letís just beat Lyon and see what happens.

I really do think that EPCR should take a leaf out of UEFA's book and prevent clubs from the same pool from meeting in the quarter finals. In many ways a quarter final, even one that we lose, could provide some valuable experience for our developing squad, but a third tonking by Leinster in the same season is of no benefit whatsoever.

If we want to be the best we play the best. If itís Leinster then so be it and turn up with a full armoury and the right attitude. Either way we learn where we need to strengthen or show how good we can be and onto the next game whatever and wherever that maybe

All this is really messy.

Why can't the EC organisers stick to 4 groups and the top 2 go through... like every normal group/ knockout competition?

Why does everything have to be so difficult.

At least its not as bad as the world cup from about 1998 where there were five groups and some of the qualifiers had to play an extra round of matches before the QF's England included

At the Qf's much depends on what recovery time the oposition have had. If its the Irish and they had a week off no chance. With the team we put out, but a midfield of Francis and Proctor plus Big T on the wing we would be in with a shout anywhere else

Too much seeding - put eight balls in a bag and see what comes out.

Really torn as to preferred outcome. Never want to see my team lose but in the overall scheme of things, a couple of weekends off in April/May could be preferable to an away quarter final be it Racing, Exeter or Dublin Rovers.

Nothing I can do about it so the sofa it is tomorrow afternoon.

Playing in things like European QFs are what the big name players thrive on. That is why Saints can sign and keep such players. Letís beat Lyon and see what is thrown up in QF. Whoever it is come April with drier pitches we know we can play attacking rugby.

Sorry anyone who would rather a week off that a European QF really needs to look at the ambitions of the club and the players.

I do however agree the competition needs changing to avoid playing the same team again.

So much optimism - beating Lyon away is a massive ask - let's wait and see.

Lyon have only won one game in their time in the top flight of European competition and that was against Treviso. They are not the same side as they are in the league.
