Potential Brexit Effect for Rugby

Said from the outset that this would have a impact on the Premiership and probably the lower leagues as well.

It'll all work out in the end.

More young English players in the Prem a la Northampton Saints. More focus on the academy training, skills, mentorship... England probably wins (assuring no cut n paste agreement)

I thought Matavesi had English heritage... He's Cornish.

Wouldn’t the Matevesi circumstances be different given he is serving in the military.

Yes, potentially more British players in the Premiership but Rugby will then end up as football has due to their quota rules, where you end up paying well over the odds for mediocre British players just because you have to have them.

Maximum 17 non-homegrown players in a squad and 8 home-grown in a match day squad of 25 is hardly restrictive in Premiership football

Do you see it as a coincidence that England now has a decent national football team with a team of young players who can actually play football technically well?

Matavesi born and raised in Cornwall so doesn't count. van Vuuren probably leaving at the end of the season. Ribbans English qualified. Reinach leaving so that leaves 4 and both Tuala and Api getting towards the end of contracts which leaves Naiyaravoro and Van Wyk in the longer term.

Yeah, the Daily Mail article goes by the wiki squad lists - we went through this on the Bath board for ours.
For us, they counted:

Kolpak: Francois Louw, Mike Williams and Josh Matevesi - with Matevesi being born in Cornwall and holding a British passport
EU: Jack Davies - who was born in Swindon and holds a British passport, but played for Spain U18 (mother IIRC)
Other overseas: Jackson Willison, Lucas Paz

So 2 out of our 6 overseas players are English; whilst the 2 genuine Kolpak players have both been in the country plenty long enough to get settled status (assuming that applies to Kolpak as well as EU)

Boris J, as a keen rugby player (against school children) will obviously be monitoring the situation closely.

Do we really believe that come 1st January next year plane loads of rugby players will be deported because Brexit happens.

Will they be on the extra UK funded airbus planes ?

No, but unless they change the foreign player rule, as it stands we might see a load of them not in the match day squad
