When discussing a players value to a team it is worth remembering that an individuals contribution cannot always be measured by stats and the various metrics of modern analysis; if that were all there was to it then it would no longer be "sport" and everything would become predictable. There are some whose influence on a team transcends form and other variables and whose presence on the team sheet inspires confidence and delight because they are totemic for the team and bring something undefinable extra often resulting in some match turning effect whether obvious to the spectator or not. Some that spring quickly to mind even though they might sometimes have had shockers include Matt Perry, Dan Lyle. Grewcock and Mile Catt even though he had the odd stinker. There are others I could mention but I make no apology for adding Banahan's name to that list. Never the fastest, nimblest, most skilful but ,seriously, look at his contributions in all kinds of ways. Anyone who watches carefully (and you won't pick this up on TV) will notice the amount of quiet decision making throughout a match at important moments, never mind those physical moments where he still frequently nails a situation. If the club didnt make an effort to keep him I might be tempted to stay at home in London and watch Rosalyn Park instead. Of course this is a sentimental view from an old school lifetime fan completely at odds with the reality of modern professional sport so perhaps there is a good case for enjoying amateur sport in the lower leagues as an antidote!
