Sadly, my own experience suggests otherwise - I bought tickets for Scotland v Australia about 2 years ago for myself and my wife. For the entire game we (not personally as we ‘kept our heads down’) experienced non stop abuse directed toward the English - who weren’t even playing. We dared not talk above a whisper for fear of retribution. Same on the tram back into Edinburgh. Scots were beaten by the Aussies...who got the abuse -
the English. Never, ever, ever again for us, not just rugby but Scotland generally. Have your referendum and go your own way - if that will take the heat out of the Scots vitriol toward the English then even I’d vote for it! It’s gone way way beyond the friendly rivalry I’ve actually enjoyed in Cardiff and Ireland.
