Why are RFU academies attached to clubs in the first place? Leedshire still have one despite almost certain relegation from the Championship. You could make a case for academies to be divorced from the clubs and instituting some sort of 'draft' system.

I donít think the draft system would work as the current academy set up means clubs choose to invest or not in producing academy players for their first teams. To have your best nurtured academy talent to be picked up by a lesser club if the draft worked similar to the NFL style one would be a bit of a pointless exercise.

We are much better off having a no approach rule for the first 2-3 years of an academy star getting a pro contract and a period after that where if they are signed by another club, compensation is paid in relation to how many first team appearances were made and if they got any international call ups.

Maybe the academy players that donít get offered contracts could then maybe go in to some sort of draft process as the host club hasnít seen enough to offer a contract.
