Anyone expecting Yorkshire Carnegie to stroll to victory yesterday got a shock when the visitors, Ealing Trailfinders failed to read the script and kept the contest going for the full 80 minutes. If their kicker had been on better form things might have turned out differently....
After a tight, disciplined performance at Rotherham the lads reverted to sloppy defence, penalties and yellow cards yesterday. However the backline started to function for the first time this season and we scored four good tries before halftime, usually from broken play and involving a dazzling run from an individual. Buzz and Jonah both took the "route 1" option leaving defenders grasping at fresh air. Ealing were not down and out though. Nathan Hannay, with something to prove perhaps, crashed over for a try.
Our discipline wobbled, Buzz went off for 10 minutes and Ealing scored again. However Jonah "Dancing feet" Holmes raced the length of the pitch to offload to Forsyth for our fourth try before Buzz returned.. 26-13 at halftime looked a comfortable enough lead which I thought we would extend in the second period.
The second half was rather disjointed. The scrums became the ref's focus of attention. We seemed unable to do anything right. Buzz raced away to put Steggman in but the visitors persisted. Beech came on, went off. Leonard had kicked some great conversions but too often gifted possession to Ealing with some lame kicking from hand. The highlight of the game, for me, was a dazzling run from Jonah, starting laterally then darting through the defence. He was tackled short of the line but Phil Neilsen managed to get the ball over the line for the sixth and final try.
Last word went to Ealing who scored a fourth try for a deserved bonus point.
After the game Brush said he was both pleased and frustrated. I think we all felt that way. Jonah was man of the match. Buzz was awesome. We scored 6 good tries. Our discipline was poor and our defence nodded off occasionally. The league form is starting to sort itself out. We are top with 3 from 3. Bristol are second 3 points behind us.
Next week London Scottish are the visitors. We need to improve to get the right result. Some consistency in our performance is required. Brush has his work cut out for him this week.

I expect Ealing to pick up a win soon- they never have up
Overall a frustrating afternoon. I came away feeling I had seen too much of the man in the middle and not enough rugby

How long did we have to endure the fiasco under our own posts in front of the Western terrace?
We could have had 3 or 4 ITV-style ad breaks in that time and made some money. The ref has to take responsibility to provide an entertainment. Absolutely nothing happened so far as the game was concerned for what seemed to take longer than the half time break. I don't blame the players for that. We wanted to get away by fair means or foul and Ealing wanted to stay put for as long as they could. If the players don't get on with a scrum the ref has plenty of sanctions to encourage them. There would be uproar if a 10 minute hiatus occurred in a televised game.
