MOSELEY VS WORCESTER MATCH SATURDAY 2ND OCTOBER

So Saturday will be bringing us a local derby to savour – one of the great clubs of the amateur era against the upstarts of the professional era!

Now well established at Billesley Common, following the demise of The Reddings, Moseley see Billesley as their permanent home, supported by a rolling 99 year lease from Birmingham City Council. The professional era has been a rocky ride for the club and most of the players remain part-time combining playing with flexible jobs, such as teaching, coaching and staff jobs at the club.

But the future looks bright with planning consent given for a 5000 all seated stand opposite the current clubhouse for which 75% of the funding is already in place. (This will be a big move on from the current stand which I recollect being our old demolished North Stand!)

On the playing side, Moseley retain a link with Gloucester and have operated a dual registration agreement with them for several years. It’s a sign of the way the club is going though that none of the Gloucester players have been called on so far this year. The Moseley pack is one of the strongest in the Championship and don’t be surprised if their tactics on Saturday are similar to those operated particularly by Rotherham but also (almost successfully) by Doncaster! They aspire realistically to an end season position of between 6th and 8th.

Moseley have established themselves as one of the friendliest clubs in the division with good free parking, an enthusiastic atmosphere and, of particular interest to yours truly, an excellent choice of food as well as a real ale tent. (The pork butties are particularly to be recommended apparently!).

So, whatever the result on Saturday - and every week of course we have to accept starting as favourites – I forecast a very enjoyable afternoon for everyone making the short trip to south Birmingham.
