Doncaster Away — The Real Test Begins!

A Challenge Worthy of Champions

There are away fixtures in a season that carry a little more significance than others. They are the games that test a team's ambition, expose its weaknesses and reveal whether the confidence built during the opening weeks is founded on something substantial. This Saturday, Worcester Warriors travel to Castle Park to face Doncaster Knights, and make no mistake, this is one of those occasions. Six wins from six league games have given us a magnificent start to the defence of our Championship crown, but now comes a challenge that will tell us rather more about the credentials of this Worcester side. Doncaster are an established force in the second tier, a club with professional rugby experience, a strong rugby infrastructure and a home ground where visiting teams know they will have to earn everything. If we want to be Champions again, these are the places where we must prove it.

And we should need no reminding of what awaits us. Last season, Doncaster caused Worcester enormous problems at Castle Park, snatching a dramatic 34–31 victory with a late try. It was a painful afternoon, not least because the Warriors had fought so hard to get themselves into a position to win the game. We eventually gained revenge at Sixways with a 25–20 victory, but that narrow margin told its own story. There is little between these sides when they meet, and Doncaster will certainly remember that home victory. They will believe they can do it again. This is not a fixture in which Worcester can simply turn up, rely on reputation and expect the points to follow.

The Knights have undergone changes in their operating model for this season, adopting a hybrid approach while retaining their professional rugby environment and ambitions. They remain a serious Championship club, with a proud history and a clear desire to compete at the highest possible level. Their opening results have been mixed, with two victories and four defeats from their first six matches, including a heavy defeat to Ealing last weekend. But we should be under no illusion: a difficult start does not make Doncaster a soft touch. Quite the opposite. They will see a home fixture against the league leaders as an opportunity to make a statement, restore confidence and remind the division what they are capable of.

For Worcester, the numbers make impressive reading. Six played, six won. We have beaten Bedford 40–5, Rotherham 78–12, Richmond 45–26, Nottingham 49–24, Hartpury 34–28 and Blackheath 31–19. It has been an outstanding opening sequence, with the Warriors demonstrating attacking ambition, an ability to score tries from different areas of the pitch and, perhaps most importantly, the resilience to win when circumstances have made life difficult. The comeback at Hartpury, after losing a player to a red card, was a particularly important demonstration of character. The victory over Blackheath showed that the side can continue to find ways to win. We have every reason to be encouraged, but the real measure of a team is not how it performs when everything is going its way. It is how it responds when an opponent takes the game to it.

That is what makes Saturday so important. Doncaster will not be interested in the Warriors' unbeaten record, the points scored in previous rounds or our position at the top of the table. They will want to disrupt our rhythm, challenge us physically and make Castle Park an uncomfortable place to play. We must be prepared for a hard, uncompromising contest. The forwards will need to match the home side in the set piece and around the breakdown, while our backs must be ready to take their opportunities when they come. There will be no room for careless penalties, loose possession or periods of complacency. We need to start with purpose, maintain our discipline and show the confidence to play our own game under pressure.

Head Coach Matt Everard has assembled a squad with a blend of physicality, pace, experience and attacking invention. We have seen what Tim Anstee brings to the contest, the threat Jake Garside poses with ball in hand, the calm influence of Will Reed and the power and determination of the pack. Matt Kvesic's leadership will be important in a match that is likely to demand every ounce of commitment. But Saturday is not about one individual. It is about fifteen players taking responsibility, the replacements making their contribution and a squad showing that it has the depth and determination required to compete over a long Championship season. Champions are not made by one spectacular performance. They are made by consistency, hard work and the ability to win difficult games.

Match Outlook

I expect Doncaster to come out with considerable intensity. They will want to make the most of home advantage, put Worcester under pressure and turn this into a physical contest. The Knights know they have troubled us before, and they will be looking to repeat that performance. Worcester must be ready from the opening whistle. A strong start, accuracy at the set piece, control of possession and discipline will be essential. We cannot afford to give Doncaster encouragement through avoidable mistakes. Equally, we must not allow the occasion to restrict our attacking ambition. We have the players and the ability to hurt this side, but we will have to earn the right to play.

There is another ingredient that makes this fixture special: the travelling support. We may be away from Sixways, but we are never away from our club. Wherever the Warriors play, the gold and blue travel with them. Those supporters who make the journey to Castle Park will be carrying more than scarves and flags; they will be carrying the pride of a club that has endured some very dark days and fought its way back to where it belongs. We know what it means to follow Worcester. We know the disappointments, the uncertainty, the heartbreak of administration and the extraordinary feeling of seeing our club rise again. We have earned the right to enjoy these occasions, and we should never underestimate the part supporters play in the journey.

So, to everyone making the trip to Doncaster, make yourselves heard. Let the players know that the supporters have travelled with belief, expectation and an unwavering commitment to the cause. There may be a thousand miles between some of us and the pitch, but there is no distance between the team and the people who stand behind it. When the game gets tough, when Doncaster come at us and when our boys need that extra lift, let them hear the Warriors faithful. We have stood together through far worse than a difficult afternoon at Castle Park.

And to the players, this is an opportunity. An opportunity to show the division that Worcester are not simply the team who won last season's Championship. We are a team determined to build on that achievement, to raise our standards and to defend our title with courage and conviction. Doncaster will test us. They will challenge us. They will make us work for every point. Good. That is precisely the sort of contest Champions must be prepared to win.

Saturday. Castle Park. A tough opponent. A tougher challenge.

We know what Doncaster can do, and we know what is required. Now it is time for the Warriors to show them what Worcester can do. No fear, no excuses and no surrender. Every tackle, every carry, every scrum and every last ounce of effort must count. We have come too far, fought too hard and waited too long to take our place among the Championship's leading sides to let an opportunity like this pass us by.

STAND TALL, WARRIORS.
TAKE THE FIGHT TO DONCASTER.

LOUD, PROUD AND PASSIONATE
COME ON YOU WARRIORS!

Hi all, as a Donny supporter I’m looking forward to this one. There’s no denying that Worcester have been very impressive so far this season and are deservedly top of the table. The Knights, on the other hand have been very inconsistent and have lurched from the very good to the awful, often within the same game. 2 wins out of 6 is probably a fair reflection of where we’re at. We were very comprehensively beaten at Ealing last week, as we were at Pirates in the opening game of the season. We were very poor at Blackheath a few weeks ago and were deservedly beaten - but then we put 50 on Ampthill in the woods the following week, typical Donny, that.

In our two matches at Castle Park so far we’ve been pretty good. We managed to win comfortably against an awkward Hartpury side in the second game of the season and then 3 weeks ago, after a very poor start where we gifted them a 14-0 lead, we more than matched a very strong Coventry side and were unlucky to lose right at the death, a bit of indiscipline in key moments probably costing us the win in that one.

Our back division is definitely one of the better ones in the league and can create tries from very little. Our forward pack is inconsistent at the moment and was very much second best last week at Ealing. However, in the game before that we did match Coventry physically. Our set-piece has been wobbly at times this season so I’m sure Worcester will try and dominate there - but if Donny get the basics of their game right then the talent is there to challenge any side in the league, especially at home.

Verdict: Donny will lift their game against the league leaders and are capable of an upset if everything clicks - but, unfortunately for me, I would expect Worcester’s bench and superior pack to see them through in the end. Warriors by 10 points.

Hi Donnyknightfan good to hear from you.

Like you im looking forward to the game tomorrow and ill take a "Warriors by 10points" anytime. (Sm152)

I wish i was so certain. For me it will depend how we start. If we start like last week (we were poor and not very accurate) it could be a different result.

Tickets purchased and looking forward to tomorrows game

I have a foot slightly in both camps, long time Warriors fan but daughters partner is one of the Donny players. Will be watching tomorrow with interest and if we’re to lose our 100% record this season happy to lose it to Donny.

I think the knights have some advantage at 11, 13 and 14 in terms on size and go forward. Equally we probably have a bit more pace there. Donny have had injury issues up front especially in the second row and are still adjusting to a part time set up.

At home they are a tough proposition and where I think we will shade it, it will be close. We will need to be better than we were last week against Blackheath.

That aside Castle Park is a cracking ground and if you are visiting then a cow pie is a must.

We were utter rubbish, do we train together or are they working from home home!?

We have got worse week on week.

The first meeting against a decent team exposed our lack of cohesive play especially defence.

Defence was poor today, mainly out wide, rush defence exposed weakness and left huge gaps

A bit strong JP.
We were second best, and every facet of our kicking game was poor. Doncaster showed a great desire and we couldn’t cope . Lessons learnt I hope. Two yellows technically correct but pretty soft didn’t help.

Warriors unfailing ability to concede two scores to the opposition before turning up was bound to bite them sooner or later. This was a monotonously regular problem last season and sadly persisted into this one. Anyone with any suggestions as to the cause? Is there something wrong with the pre match warm-up? Too little, too much or not the right processes? Whichever, it must be glaringly obvious to the coachiing team and needs to be addressed urgently.

Strong maybe Rollo but sometimes a strong reaction is what’s needed, before the decline becomes permanent. I hope a similar team response will stop the rot.

The first real test of this season’s credentials and we fell well short of what is needed.

The biggest need is defence!

Defence was not so good last season but this season it is getting pretty awful 😣 Our defence at present is lacking in organisation and leadership on the field. The backs are just bumps in the road for the opposition to speed over.

To demonstrate, from our first game of the season we have worsened by the game

Points conceded
Match 1 - 5pts
Match 2 - 12pts
Match 3 - 26pts
Match 4 - 24pts
Match 5 - 28pts
Match 6 - 19pts
Match 7 - 36pts

Whoever is coaching defence needs to stop and take a long deep look at his tactics because it’s not working.

We lost fair and square, Donni took their changes with penalty kicks and buy did it pay off. I don't think we kicked any of our kicks at goal and maybe our guys need to aim to make the kicks a little easier by going over nearer to the posts since most of our trys end up being in the corners (yes, I know every try is an important one but I'm making the point that some of our players don't think that way, in my opinion of course !). That makes conversion very difficult and although Will has been good at getting them over at Sixways, it's one of our weak points away from home.

That said, every team has bad days and this was one of those. Let's just continue our support and believe in the TEAM, meaning coaches & players etc.

We improved when Naulago came in at the end of last season. Same is true this season, 13 is difficult defensively and that largely is where we are getting exposed.

Donny have a good back 3 with some X factor, they more than matched us up front and took their chances.

Correspondingly our kicking was poor and some of the decision making dismal. Why we kicked it away twice in their half in the last ten minutes I have no idea. Donny know at that point they can’t give a penalty away, keep the ball in hand and apply pressure!

Yesterday wasn’t a disaster, but it showed clearly where there is some work to do.

Well I was as surprised as anyone with that result yesterday, expected a competitive game but thought that Warriors would ultimately have too much for us.

Donny played very well, easily our best performance of the season - bar a couple of early scrum penalties and the odd line-out wobble late in the game, our set-piece held up well against a quality Worcester pack. Thought we also matched them physically which was the key. Our back division is lethal when given space, they just need the ball!.

I was slightly surprised by Worcester’s approach tactically, Donny have struggled this season against teams that have been direct against us. I thought that at times you went wide before you had really done the hard yards up front. There were flashes of what you guys could do but all too often a knock on or a turnover stopped the momentum. I was also puzzled why Worcester resorted to so much kicking in the last 15 minutes. Going for a box kick twice when you’re 2 points down inside the last 10 minutes and inside the opposition half is just bizarre. Having said that I’m sure that Warriors will learn from those mistakes and get stronger as the season goes on. I’m just pleased that we got the win yesterday, because not many teams will beat you guys this season, it’s a real feather in our cap.

Just a final word on the Warrior hordes, a genuinely knowledgeable group of people that really care about their club and who really added to the occasion yesterday. I was in amongst them in the stand and it was a really enjoyable afternoon watching the match with them and they were very gracious after the game. Well done to all and see you again soon.

I think I'm siding with FC on this one. We are undoubtedly a good squad with good players and coaches. Last season, during one of our low spots, I remember posting about having another set of eyes from a trusted outsider to help with our defence. Someone the coaches can be comfortable with their additional input.
Since our unique return and becoming champions in season one ,there has I feel, been a subliminal pressure to survive, succeed and progress.
From us as fans to the wider rugby community ,both positive and negative, the media, the RFU, the backdrop of finances and the expectation of working towards the Prem. I'm sure the coaches would probably disagree and give valid reasons but it is nevertheless there. The last fans evening led by James Tyas was excellent and showed the attention to detail and analysis is exemplary. Good teams to great teams use every dimension to push themselves on. Why not an additional person who shares the vision ?

I watch a lot of Donny play and I was surprised by the way we played. You matched us up front and we kicked the ball back to you giving your back 3 too much of a run off the back fence at us.

Our bench is stronger and with injuries you have up front the smart move would have been to tire your first choice pack out.

No excuses though, I think on the day you were just better than we were, smarter and more intensity.
