Exeter Chiefs return to Sandy Park after last weeks clash at Welford Road, to take on Newcastle Falcons in the 1st of 5 fixtures between the two sides this season.

Well the weeks are poitively rocketing by and we're already looking forward to the Chiefs 3rd Premiership match .
The story so far has been pretty exciting with an opening win over Glaws followed by holding a lead for 60+ minutes over the Tigers at Welford Road. Lots of positive things have been said about both performances but, and it's a very big but, nobody at Sandy Park is getting carried away by this. Rob Baxter said from the outset that the Chiefs will be on a steep learning curve and looking to improve game on game. Rob's comments in the Express & Echo reinforce this.
The squad have certainly laid a mighty impressive base line that I (and many others) cannot wait to see develop.
Going into Saturday's match the two sides playing record shows very little difference between them.
So, what can we expect? Another highly committed performance from both sides who will be looking to add much needed points to the 4 they have so far. Unlike the Chiefs Newcastle lost their first match and turned around a 17-3 half time defecit against Wasps with 26 un-answered points in the second half to record a well deserved win. The winning side featured two ex Bristol players from last season's Championship runners-up in Luke Eaves and Redford Pennycook. If they feature this week they are likely to get re-aquainted with ex team mates James Phillips and Luke Arscott as well as a lot of players who featured for the Chiefs in the same campaign. In fact Rob Baxter's selections so far have been mainly based around the successfull Championship team and I doubt there will be too many changes in Saturday's selection when it is announced.
Newcastle have not visited Sandy Park but will be sure of a warm welcome from what is turning out to be a very noisy Exeter crowd who will be hoping to cheer the Chiefs to victory.
The long range forcast looks fair with no rain and light winds (that'll make a change at Sandy Park), which bodes well for what could be an open game although both sides have Fly Halves who can punish any indiscretions.
My forcast, score that is, as I haven't a clue about the weather aor some would say, about predicting scores. A Chiefs win but as we know there are no easy games in this league.

This is a 6pt game for the sides that could possibly feature in the relegation area of the Premiership next April. In my opinion : If the Chiefs start at a similar pace to the Gloucester game, with some points on the table, there is no reason why it could be a big W at 80 mins.
But, the defence needs to very tight especially down through the middle and wide out. Chiefs cannot afford any ill discipline resulting in players to the bench.

The warm welcome sounds delightful... if anyone would like to greet me as I get off the bus with a cornish pasty & a bucketful of caffeine it'd be much appreciated... 4a.m. start for us... we must be nuts! See you all tomorrow...
