As a depleted and demoralised Scotland prepares to do battle with the Irish this forthcoming Saturday afternoon, let us glance back at the rare occasions when the two neighbours have drawn against each other. Draws between Ireland and Scotland have been very thin on the ground. Here is a concise guide to the handful of occasions when both rugby teams settled for a share of the spoils. The matches took place at Lansdowne Road or Murrayfield, unless otherwise stated.
18th of February 1893: IRELAND 0 Scotland 0; at Ballynafeigh, Belfast
Ireland failed to record a single point in that year's tournament. However they at least avoided an eventual whitewash with a no-score draw in south Belfast.
15th of February 1896: IRELAND 0 Scotland 0
This was the home team's only dropped point in this Home Nations tournament, so it prevented an elusive triple crown.
24th of February 1900: IRELAND 0 Scotland 0
Four Scotsmen and one Irishmen won their first caps, but nobody on either side could muster a single score.
3rd of March 1979: Scotland 11 IRELAND 11
Ulster's scrum half Colin Patterson scampered over for a try in each half. The hosts also scored a try in each half, courtesy of Andy Irvine and Keith Robertson.
5th of March 1994: IRELAND 6 Scotland 6
Eric Elwood slotted home a penalty in each half. Gavin Hastings kicked 2 penalties after the interval. This was Ireland's only point against Scotland in the 1990s.
