How Matas Jurevicius realised a family dream moving to Quins

For 20-year-old Matas Jurevicius, signing for entrenched Premiership side Harlequins was something which he had always dreamed of. Coming from a family that had always supported the capital side, the second-rower made his father just that bit happier upon moving to the Twickenham Stoop.

Where it all started

Jurevicius’ career had always been promising from the beginning, earning his first contract in rugby union aged 17 ahead of the 2018-19 season. That came about following an impressive campaign for the London Scottish Colts during the 2017-18 season which culminated in a tour with the England Counties Under-18s. After earning his first contract, the promising young forward was selected by the England Counties Under-20s side.

With a burgeoning reputation he was hotly tipped by top real money casinos to do well and Jurevicius hit the big time with London Scottish, starting regularly during the 2019-20 Championship season before, of course, the coronavirus pandemic struck, curtailing the campaign.

No problem in dealing with the physical and outside pressure

But, as just a teenager, enforcing his status at a Championship club is no mean feat particularly when considering that the second-row/lock position is so physically demanding. Taking to the role like a duck to water, Jurevicius is likely to go from strength-to-strength under the stewardship of former London Irish and Saracens flanker turned Head of Rugby Paul Gustard.

With Quins currently a mid-table side and one that was given odds of 25/1 with online casino and sports betting sites to win the Premiership before the season began, signings such as 20-year-old Jurevicius certainly instills hope for the future as the club remains intent on building for the future.

A stature that belies his age

At 6 ft 4 with a weight of 115kg behind him, Jurevicius is an enormous prospect and one that has certainly done his reputation no harm with assured performances in this season’s Championship. Aggressive in contact with the determination to succeed and improve, Jurevicius has both the athletic potential and mindset necessary to pin down a starting berth in the increasingly competitive Gallagher Premiership.

Though Jurevicius will not play the remainder of the season for Quins, the first team is back in action on August 14 as they host Sale at the Twickenham Stoop.
