Newcastle Falcons v Doncaster Knights - 29Sep19 - Teams Up

By Falcona
September 27 2019

Falcons name side for Sunday’s home opener against Doncaster Knights kick off 3pm  at Kingston Park Stadium.

Dean Richards has handed a first start to centre George Wacokecoke, who scored two tries after coming on from the bench. He partners Ben Stevenson in midfield, Toby Flood moving to fly-half in an otherwise unchanged back line.  Jamie Blamire continues at hooker after catching the eye last time out, Sebastian de Chaves making his club debut in the second row following his summer move from last year’s Championship winners London Irish. Fellow lock Sean Robinson captains the side, with flanker John Hardie coming in to start on the open-side.

Director of rugby Dean Richards said: “Doncaster are a very organised team with a big physical presence in the pack and a good set of backs, so it won’t be an easy game.   “We were a little bit rusty last weekend with having had no warm-up games, and that showed over in Jersey to a degree. We came through in the end, I thought the boys did quite well and we’re hoping to see some progression on Sunday.”

Richards hopes North East sports fans will take full advantage of an appetising day of action, with both codes of rugby on display at Kingston Park Stadium.

“It’s a great day to be a rugby fan because you can watch all the Rugby World Cup games in the morning, come here for Newcastle Thunder’s rugby league semi-final at noon and then stay on for our game at 3pm,” he said.   “There’s even the Newcastle United game on the TVs in the bar afterwards if you really want to stretch out the day, and it’s great for people to take advantage of having so much sport going on.”

Looks like we are racking up the injuries again

27/09/2019 14:47
Havnt played for 5 months and huge injury list whats going on during training ? A few of them have also missed a lot of last season but fingers crossed apart from players on world cup duty we have a full squad to pick from when the league games start.

27/09/2019 15:21
A fair few of them are scheduled off-season operations which logically need to be done during the summer.

27/09/2019 17:01
I appreciate the injury/not available list on the offy.

27/09/2019 17:32
No worries rubyrhone.

Thatís not an extensive list and is only included because Dean gave it as a direct quote. Iím just trying to manage expectations here because it isnít a weekly feature of the team announcement, much as I know some people want it to be.

Still think we will have enough in this game and this season.

57-0 what a win for us, some fantastic performances for us.

29/09/2019 17:29
Blamire looked impressive again...Radwan again.

Some good pack performances.

The performance of one player is still concerning me...but ill hold judgement until the season is up and running

I thought the team selection showed an intent to win the game, however I wasnít expecting such a gulf!

I wonder if this is a taste of what is to come?

Was pleasantly surprised by the adventurous approach and few errors in the damp conditions. Much more entertaining to be able to count the number of box kicks on the fingers of one hand rather than the tentacles of half a dozen octopuses.

Solid performance. Still rusty in parts but a good start. If we are able to defend like that for the season I honestly donít think many teams will be able to get on top of us and can see us defensively suffocating teams.

Also remembering thereís plenty of capable players outside of that matchday squad to step in shows the squad is in a pretty good place. Looking forward to the next game.

Falcons 57 Doncaster Knights 0

Newcastle Falcons enjoyed a convincing Championship Cup victory in their first home game of the season on Sunday, putting Doncaster Knights to the sword.

Leading 24-0 at the interval and continuing in a similar manner thereafter, Newcastle began the afternoon strongly, stealing the Knightsí first line-out and looking to play an ambitious offloading game.

Still players to come back from the World Cup!

Good to see our lads playing to the ref. He had been very generous with offside at Doncaster's restarts, allowing runners to be in front of the kicker. On our Kick off for the second half we managed to have 5 players up to 2 metres in front of the kicker. Is this perhaps the most ignored law by officials?

Some good running rugby in not easy conditions. Felt a bit sorry for Doncaster, credit to them they gave 100% to the end

Demolition job 2nd game up with no pre season , cant be faulting that ! Cant remeber the last time i seen us have so much possesion .

Thought Flood was decent and Connon later on, Radwan and Arscott lively , Blamire everyhwere and Graham stood out too but all played their part in a comfortable win.

So far so good.

30/09/2019 16:37
I still think they pass out to Radwan too much. Need some alternative strategies to ring the changes. I know the lad is wildfire but every team will be on to this tactic very soon and his speed will be nullified.
