Johnny Williams makes his first-team comeback for Newcastle Falcons on Sunday after overcoming testicular cancer, his side travelling to Yorkshire Carnegie in Greene King IPA Championship action.

The 23-year-old centre was diagnosed over the summer and has undergone chemotherapy, Williams’ previous competitive game having seen him scoring on his England debut as they defeated the Barbarians at Twickenham in June.

The former London Irish man played the first half for a Falcons XV last Saturday during their 31-5 win over Watsonians in preparation for this weekend’s return to senior action, his inclusion coming as one of 12 changes from the side which defeated Doncaster 34-10 last Friday.    Full Offy Preview Here

Yorkshire Carnegie Director of Rugby Phil Davies has praised his squad for their commitment and determination ahead of Sunday’s huge challenge against high flying Newcastle Falcons at Emerald Headingley.    Davies arrived back at the club just after New Year and took charge of last week’s 52-0 loss at Cornish Pirates.

However, Davies says he has been impressed by the squad’s willingness to take on board his ideas and believes results will improve in the long term.

Davies has made two changes to his side for Sunday’s game. Young hooker Adam Brown comes in at hooker for Louis Musetti, who is a replacement this week, whilst James Robbins starts at full back. Robbins inclusion allows Dan Lancaster to revert from full back to centre and Joe Carlisle replaces Joe Ford at fly half. Ford is ruled out through illness.

He commented, “Undoubtedly this week we face a big challenge against the Falcons.

"They have a huge budget having coming down from the Gallagher Premiership this season and Dean Richards has done a great job there in building a strong squad. Our focus has been on improving in the long term however, I have to say, that I have seen the guys get better with every training session.

"Obviously, we are part time and that means we have limited time on the field together however we have made extra gym sessions available for the boys thanks to Weetwood Hall and Implexus Gym in Leeds so they can fit more in around their schedules away from the club and they have all taken advantage of that.

“I would also like to say a big thank you to the Leeds Beckett team, who gave up their time this week to have an opposed session against us at the Headingley campus. They have got a big game themselves this Saturday against Swansea and we wish them all the best with that.

“Away trips to Cornish Pirates and Jersey Reds either side of a home game against Newcastle Falcons, three of the top four currently in the league, is a tough assignment to start the New Year but our focus is on seeing improvement in all areas of our game. If we are doing that, then we will be stronger for the experience in the remaining games this season,”
