MATT FERGUSON JOINS NORTHAMPTON SAINTS COACHING TEAM

The 39-year-old has spent the last 12 months working as a scrum consultant with London Irish where he linked up with new Saints tighthead Ben Franks.

He has also for the last three years headed up the forwards division for the England Women’s team, in which time the side topped the world rankings, reached last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup final as well as beating New Zealand on their own soil in Rotorua.

After initially working with the Red Roses’ as a forwards coach from 2009 to 2011, Ferguson moved on to stints in the men’s game at Cardiff Blues, Bristol Rugby and London Welsh before returning to Twickenham in 2015 to sculpt a dominant set piece and driving maul for England’s women.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at London Irish this season and with England Women over the past three years. While I will be sad to leave such great groups of players and management, this is a really exciting opportunity for me to work for one of the biggest clubs in English rugby and learn from one of the most well-respected coaches in the world in Chris Boyd,” said Ferguson.

“I’m honoured to be given the chance here, and I’m really looking forward to teaming up with such a talented group of players already at Saints.”

Saints director of rugby Chris Boyd added: “Matt showed himself to be the standout candidate during our search. I was not only impressed by his experience but also his superb attitude and meticulous level of preparation – I am sure he will be a great fit here.”

Ferguson’s focus as assistant coach will be on Saints’ scrum, and he will arrive at Franklin’s Gardens in June – in time for the start of Northampton’s preseason training.

This is a welcome appointment as it has been obvious for some time that our forward pack is not as dominant when scrummaging as it used to and needs to be. Who will coach the other aspects of forwards play ?

I've never heard of him but good to hear as scrum has to be a coaching development area

Interesting itís not a being classed as a forwards coach appointment, maybe we have another on the way, good to have a scrum specialist. I bet the forwards canít wait to start work with him, a breath of fresh air.

A young coach so hopefully progressive and forward thinking in his approach.

Honestly not heard of him before but that's not a bad thing.

So as I see it, next year will be:
CB head coach
Ferguson scrum coach

Dickens defence?
Dowson forwards coach?

Have I missed anyone?

Let's hope Matt is as successful as the other Ferguson. Welcome Matt

Welcome to the club. I know little about his reputation so hope he can be a success here. Interesting that we have hired a specific scrum coach, with so many young props some additional support is always good for their development. It may also indicate that a new forwards coach maybe able to have more time working on the breakdown and other aspects of forward play.

Having read all the details on the web about Matt, I was impressed how not one article didn't include analysis. Read how he developed Bern for the Red Roses or the analysis of the shortcomings of London Welsh. Thoughtful, to the point and technically sound. Very happy.

Looks like a good bit of business. A young coach with good experience at different levels looking to make a name for himself. I am happy too that we are expanding the coaching team to include more specialists.

Youíve forgotten Sam Vesty as attack coach...
Not sure Dowse will get overall forward coach job yet - Iíd hope for more proven (SH ?) recruit to come ?
Dowse will probably stay as defence coach ?
Donít think Dickens role confirmed yet, but may still be head coach with Boyd as DoR ...?

I expect St Bart's "lad" will be able to give some useful inside knowledge on him?

Do you think we'll appoint a separate forward's coach as well then?
I'd like to see Dickens back as defence coach. Our defence was awesome whilst he was in charge. Not sure where that leaves Dowson though. That's why I thought they might make him forward's coach.

I donít disagree about Dickens as defence coach, but theyíve only just given that job to Dowse, and while everyone seem to rate him very highly, he is still relatively unproven and the overall forwards coach is a big job ...

Iíd also be surmised if Boyd doesnít want an experienced forward coach as his noí2, but who knows....

Iím usually wrong !!

Sounds like a positive signing, definitely looking to the future.

If weíre also looking for a Forwards Coach alongside Matt, Iíd love to see Tom Smith back at the Gardens. Respected across the globe in the game, and another passionate Saints legend in the coaching set up...

I can't believe that Ferguson would join just as Scrum coach, it would be a step backwards for him. He could free-lance that job in the way that Sean Edwards does as a 1 day a week defence consultant for Cardiff.

Yes, you are quite right, Eif. Thatís probably what Ferguson (his first name is Matt, btw) is considering before he signs for Saints.

Oh, hang on a minute.....
