The Darkest Hour is Just Before Dawn
Up against it!

At the time of writing, things could not look bleaker. The weather across the country is threatening to cause havoc with the weekend’s sporting fixtures, so if the game does go ahead it will no doubt be a case of doing as our mum’s tell us, and wrapping up well before setting off for the ground. At least we can do that. But, here at Headingley, it is not only the weather that is bleak. Last Sunday, Carnegie turned in a horror show down at Harlequins, and a look at the league table does nothing to ease the cold weather blues. Wrapping up warm won’t cure that, so what can we do?
It is stating the obvious, but we need to start picking up points every game, and preferably winning points as opposed to LBP’s. As the solution is easy, we can start this week when the Saints of Northampton come calling. They sit proudly at the top of the heap, and anyone who saw their demolition of London Irish, will take heart from the fact that they will doubtless make a few changes to their winning line up. Unfortunately those changes may see the return of international players, so their side this week could be even stronger. And that does not bode well.
It is just possible that Saints will have one eye, (preferably both), on the Heineken Cup fixture the following week when they entertain Cardiff Blues, and with their international stars having just played four games of huge intensity they may think it prudent to give them this week off. That would deprive the Leeds faithful of seeing some of England’s brightest stars, but I can live with that if it helps our cause.
Luckily, matches are not won, or lost, the previous week, they are decided on the day, and I am sure that whoever pulls on a Leeds shirt this week will want to put last weeks’ performance well and truly behind them. Leeds squad will be strengthened by the return of Steve Thomson and Hendre Fourie, and it is to be hoped that the players who were injured last week have recovered sufficiently to figure on Sunday.
As always I’ll be there cheering on the 23 who pull on the shirt, but I hope for all our sake’s they perform better than last week. I don’t envisage a huge crowd should the game get the green light, but let’s now forget last Sunday and get behind Neil Back, Andy Key and the team and begin the great escape.
We have got Christopher White blowing the whistle, we could certainly have worse, lets just hope his two assistants are an improvement on the ones we have had who are usually either visually impaired, hard of hearing, or over weight.
My head says another defeat, but I’m the eternal optimist, and surely things can only improve. I don’t think we will win, but I hope the team play with pride and passion. If they do that, it will be a step in the right direction.
