The day the cup came to town

So on Thursday morning the Webb Ellis Trophy tour reached Headingley Carnegie stadium, and the club combined an open training session with the opportunity for fans to see the trophy. Thursday mornings are not exactly the optimum time to attract fans to Headingley, but there was a good turnout - particularly of younger fans, and there was plenty to keep everyone entertained.

The morning started with the trophy in the Café bar - it was actually there from 9:00, but the first hour was taken up with Corporate sponsors and the Club. But arriving at 9.50, I found the café bar full of players and fans, and - there it was - the famed Webb Ellis trophy. It was smaller than I expected but it certainly has "presence". I joined the queue and grinned inanely when it was my turn to be photographed. Also in the Café bar were colouring competitions for kids (and some players) face painting, and opportunities to speak to and get autographs from the players.

After the debacle of last season it was good to see the home kit already on sale in the Club shop together with a good array of training kit. I haven't decided what to spend my hard earned cash on yet- but it's good to have the choice. While I was there I picked up my tickets for the Romania game- season ticket holders have been emailed the code today for the discounted tickets.

It seems like forever since we saw any Rugby at Headingley Carnegie - but the training session certainly whetted the appetite for what is to come next week. The intensity of the training surprised me, but after over 3 months without seeing any live rugby, it was great to see some action. I have to confess with having to keep looking up the new players  - and without giving anything away, look out for the Biggsy style haircut. As I left as the training session finished the players were again signing autographs for the younger fans.

All in all, it was a great way to spend a morning - and how good would it be if the trophy were to come back on a victory tour?

Nice report on an excellent event C1. Geech, Hethers and Brush all made themselves available for a chat (though I only spoke to Brush), along with most of the players, and good to see lots of youngsters involved.
And stuff in the shop!
