Sunday Preview

By Almo
February 4 2020

Sadly match previews are a bit pointless this season, it is just a matter of predicting how many tries and tens of points we concede. However this Sunday, at 1.00 p.m. we have an event that is arguably much more important than the match against Ampthill that follows at 3.00 p.m. So lets concentrate on the meeting with our new Director of Rugby.

Phil Davies' return has been a rare ray of sunshine in what has been a bleak season. This is no disrespect to coaches, past or present, or the team, who have put in hard shifts in tough going. For the first time we have hope that the club can survive, and perhaps, someone somewhere might have some cash to splash? After all, why would Phil come down from World Cup rugby to our level if there was no possibility of the necessary finance?

Understandably match attendance numbers have been seriously down this season (though apparently we cannot afford to actually count the crowd?) but lets hope for a good turnout for Phil's meeting. Not all those that care about the club will be able to attend, however.

What do you hope Phil will say?

Are there any questions we should ask him?

I have my ideas but am sure that others have better ones. Please post your thoughts below:

Curiously the crowd figure for the latest match has actually been posted on the results section of the official site. It was 882. A sign perhaps of a new glasnost?

I hope he says:

What the playing budget will be next season and where the money is coming from.

Confirms that the club will play it's home games at Headingley next season.

Confirms that we will be reverting to Leeds Tykes.

Terrible weather forecast - heavy rain and more strong winds. Can't see many new supporters turning out.

If I had all the money I've spent on drink ..... I'd spend it on drink.

I received a personal email telling me the meeting was postponed, so good communication there, but no reason as to why.

Makes my preview rather pointless, but at least the messageboard lives on for another 14 days.

I hope that the club have better news to tell us on 1st March than what they can say on Sunday, so reasons to be optimistic!
Mike Ashley pouring in millions following the the sale of Newcastle United?
Mr Caddick making amends by throwing serious cash at the club?

Anyone any better ideas?

Just the 51mph winds to contend with Sunday then. Should be a showpiece spectacle of a game....

I think that the predicted weather for Sunday should be a great leveler. Handling and kicking will be tricky so it should be a much closer result than of late.

Not really sure what to make, as leeds exile above says who knows with the weather.

2 of our Namibian make a start...welcome to Yorkshire lads (Sm68)

It will be interesting to note at the re-arranged meeting with Phil if these are short term till the end of the season or longer with a view to building a team for next years challenge in National 1

As if the weather won't be bad enough there will also be roadworks to contend with. Yet again this week a water main burst near the North Lane traffic lights on Otley Road, creating more traffic chaos. The burst has been fixed but they have only done a temporary repair to the road itself and it will be closed from 7.00AM Sunday to 6.00AM Monday. Cry havoc and let loose the gods of queues and chaos.

If I had all the money I've spent on drink ..... I'd spend it on drink.

I salute those brave civil engineers, giving up their weekend to repair a crutial main road without disruption to rush-hour traffic.
I suggest the few hundred Carnegie fans can use Queenswood Drive instead. Thats the 19 or 19A bus, Albert. (Sm100)

Seriously, given the predicted weather conditions there must be a good chance of postponement or the engineering works "over-running" ( well known phrase to rail users).

The latest weather forecast seems content with 25 mph winds for tomorrow, a third of what we were told to expect earlier in the week.

So no excuse, Albert.

Don't know which forecast you've seen Almo but the ever reliable BBC for three o clock tomorrow has 56mph wind and 99% chance of rain which seems very Murrayfield to me on a more open pitch!

Referee Jack Makepeace's other skills as a firefighter might come into the reckoning!!

Currently, for 3.00 p.m. the weather channel is giving 44 kph (27 mph) WSW winds and the BBC Weather is showing 50 mph. Quite a difference!
