Leedsrugby.com today confirmed the rumours that Leeds Tykes have signed the talented under 21 Welsh international prop Gary Powell.

Powell started his professional rugby career in England with Richmond, making his first premiership appearance at the age of just 19, but following that club's demise in 1999, he sought a move back to his native land and has been playing for Cardiff ever since.

His story at Cardiff is one that many current Leeds players will recognise. A recognised talent in his position, but kept out of the regular first team due to injury and other players higher up in the pecking order. The move to Headingley is clearly an opportunity for him to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Alix Popham, who has rejuvinated his representative career following some excellent first team performances for the Tykes.

Many of the fans will be relieved. It has been felt for some time that cover at prop would be needed for the new term, and this is particularly so now that Heineken Cup rugby will become a reality for the White Rose boys. Tykes fan and Independent Tykes resident front-row specialist Loosehead says: "I have seen Gary Powell play a few times for Cardiff, he looks pretty useful. He can prop either side and carries the ball well."

This season is clearly the best time for all "bubbling under" international class players - with currently announced signings taken in to account, and with real hope that all incumbents will stay, the Tykes will lose no less than 13 players to various tours and the World Cup next season. Clearly then there will be plenty of opportunity for those players to make their mark at club level.

So the influx continues, and there is no doubt that Leeds have every intention of making this season more than a one-off. As far as the team, the management, and increasing numbers of fans at games is concerned, Leeds is on the map as a rugby union city, and is not intending to disappear any time soon.....
