Newport wrapped up the first ever semi-professional Premiership, by hammering Caerphilly 43-17 at Rodney Parade. Cardiff’s shock win over Neath handed Leigh Jones’ side the title with two rounds to play. Whilst doubts remain over relegation, there has been little doubt over who would be champions. Only Neath have come anywhere close to threatening Newport’s title chances.

It was the All Blacks slip up to relegation threatened Cardiff that signalled the end of any hopes that Port’ could be caught.

Black and Ambers coach Leigh Jones, who was in charge in their final season of professional rugby, was delighted to win it in front of the homes masses.

"I'm so pleased for the supporters we could finish it at home, it's the icing on the cake,"

"We've done it through hard work and a good group of youngsters."

Jones who is strongly tipped to assist possible new Dragons coach Declan Kidney, was full of praise for the way in which his club has dealt with the transition;

"I'm absolutely delighted for myself, but at times like this coaches get too many plaudits and when things are going badly they get too much criticism," Jones added.

"It's about the players, backroom staff, office staff, groundstaff and supporters, not the coach."

Cardiffs’ shocking win at Neath has pushed Llanelli well and truly into the relegation mire, after the Turks slipped up against fellow Scarlets feeder club Llandovery on Friday night. 20-11.

Trailing by two points, they need to win next week and Pontypool or Newbridge slip up or face the prospect of first division rugby.

That is unless rumours of a WRU reprieve for the West Walians prove to be true.
