Exeter Chiefs prepare to take on London Welsh at Esher's ground knowing a win will guarantee them a semi-final place.

Unfortunately we'll not get to visit Old Deer Park for this one as the sound of leather on willow takes precedence. But the Chiefs return to Esher which has been a happy hunting ground albeit against different opposition. I seem to remember watching England being defeated by Wales on the club house screen after our last visit and noticing a large Welsh contingency in the audience. This would suggest there may be good support for London Welsh and help them to feel more at home. Not that this will affect the way the Chiefs will approach the game. Rob & Co. (coaching team) have put a lot of planning into this season and he's delighted at the way things are coming together (E&E report). The team will also be sure of a lot of support from the Away Tribe who are recruiting a large and noisy raiding party.
Looking forward to the penultimate match in Stage 2 of the promotion race I thought I'd look at the records and see if there are any indicators to the likely result. I know the only game that counts is the one to be played but time on your hands leads to wandering thoughts!
So, how does the Chiefs recent 32-6 win match up to previous encounters? Well, the Chiefs have only scored more points four times in the last ten years of this fixture (although I seem to remember a cup match at ODP where the Chiefs scored 60+ points) and Welsh have only scored less on two occasions. Although the last two season's have seen close encounters the Chiefs losing margin has never been more than 9 points, whereas LW have lost by up to 48 points.
This would suggest a close fought affair, which was the case for 70 minutes at Sandy Park. However the Chiefs are building some great momentum and will take confidence from last weeks 51-15 win over Doncaster Knights. I'll stick my neck out and predict a Chiefs win by 20+ points.

Looking at the away form in the chart above we should win the next 4 away games against Welsh if the pattern continues!
But that may have to wait until they get to the Premiership!
