Chiefs end Nottingham's season in style...

Exeter Chiefs book a home semi-final place with an outstanding performance to demolish Nottingham.

Match Review

chiefslogoExeter Chiefs 53 Nottingham 10 nottslogo

Exeter Chiefs put in one of their best, if not their best performance to overwhelm Nottingham and book a home semi-final match with Bedford Blues.  As with our home game against Doncaster I expected this to be  a close fought affair, to quote from my preview:- "I don't expect there to be too much of a gap in the scores but the Chiefs look likely to have one of the biggest crowds of the season coming to roar them on to success."  I was correct about the crowd which at 5,344 was the second highest at Sandy Park this season.  Special mention must go to the Nottingham supporters who, although heavily outnumbered, cheered and sang their team throughout and after the match.

The crowd was given plenty to cheer about from the beginning of the match as the Chiefs set about demolishing their opposition.  Thank goodness we've a lengthy in-goal area as Neil Clark (voted MoM) used his speed to touch down just before the ball went dead from a charged down kick.  This set the tone for the afternoon as did Referee Sean Davey with his early penalty against Nottingham for an offside infringement at the breakdown, he gave them a warning, they chose to ignore, penalty awarded and away went Steeno with a penalty to add to his earlier conversion.  Steeno next converted from straight in front following a penalty try given for pulling down the maul, again Nottingham failed to heed Mr Davey's warning.
I thought the referee had a really good game, giving clear indication of how he was going to manage the breakdown, which kept the game flowing.  He was even handed in his reffing and quickly dealt with Bryan Rennie's rush of blood and shoulder charge by binning him , the one blemish on what was a well disciplined performance by the Chiefs.

We've seen several GP refs at Sandy Park this season and each time the Chiefs have put in a quality performance (hopefully this bodes well for the future, but there's still a mountain to climb this season).

Although Neil Clark got the MoM award it could easily have gone to many of the Chiefs players who put in a passionate and professional performance.  Personally I'd have given it to James Scaysbrook who put in a huge performance both in attack and defence.
So, at the end of the play-offs the top 4 record reads like this:

Bristol5118986103424
Exeter Chiefs6421818695420
Bedford Blues64215412529420

Bring on the Blues.......

i had a morning rant and now an afternoon rant.

re MoM
is anybody else at breaking point about the number of times we are exhorted at seemingly every break in play to vote by text for MoM? i hate the concept of a MoM anyway, rugby is a team game and how many people see the amount of grunt put in by a second row which is just as important as a flashy try scorer.

also, shouldn't the announcer tell us each time how how the text is going to cost and who gets the cash?

i hate this whole innovation.

afternoon rant ended. the sun is peeking through the clouds and i am going for a ten mile run to get rid of my bile!

More cash in the coffers and at least the ordinary fan gets a say, not a load of freeloaders who possibly have no clue.

Sorry you missed out yesterday Chader but I'm sure the guys will put on the same sort of performance next week. Until then we can all tell you what a great performance (players and supporters) you missed.(Sm100)

On the announcements - is it me or has the volume increased in line with the vocal support?
I don't really object to announcements being made or what seems to be the obligatory music after each score but can I make a plea for a reduced volume, which would allow the players to hear the applause. Can we have more care in it's use so that it isn't playing when play is about to commence.
Sorry for rambling on but I feel it's in danger of spoiling and not enhancing the great atmosphere we are building at Sandy Park.

and now the Nottingham Offy report.

Looks like we were playing an unregistered player (Sm105)

Their main site is also showing a Championship semi-final at Meadow Lane on Sat 8th May as the next fixture (Sm14)

Please don't do that to me. (Sm9)

this "more cash in the coffers" - how does that break down then? whenever they put stuff out on children in need they tell us exactly how much is going to the ggod cause. ive not heard the announcer mention what the proportion is. shouldnt they do that?

Their reporter mustn't like Clarky he named him wrong in the report and not at all in the scoring summary.

Never mind Besty, we like you!

why not ask someone who knows what the cost breakdown is? Let me see... Tony Rowe owns a small communications outfit, do you think they might have something to do with it?

Out of curiosity, do you ask the bar staff what percentage of your drink price is profit?

Didn't think so.

Yeah I know what you mean, the announcements seemed louder yesterday. The crowd were great & really got behind the team, but it seemed like the music/announcement volume had been cranked accordingly to an extent where it drowned everything else out! Still, the rugby was very good and at the end of the day I left SP a happy chappie. Well done Chiefs, and keep up the good work!!

I think there must have been new toys to play with maybe? At one point before the match the music on the tannoy in the Undercroft doubled in volume all of a sudden and I thought that the volume of annoucements and music seemed to vary.

Or was it the beer ??? (Sm129)

no i dont 'ask the bar staff' etc . . . but then the bar steward doesnt come on to the mike at every breakdown to tell me - VERY LOUDLY - that i can buy a cheap beer if i turn up early.

i hate MoM awards. ive coached for a long time at every level from U7s through to a senior team and never once awarded a MoM.

but more than that i hate the constant ramming into our ears of the MOM texting which i think is a step too far along the commercial road.

my point about the cost breakdown is that i rather thought it was a LEGAL requirement to announce the proportions of where your money was going. all the broadcast organisations seem to do this dont they?

not sure, you and i are going to agree about this, but judging by the groans i heard on saturday on the 53rd occasion the announcer patttered that nonsense out i may have a few people on my side.

still, i have a choice do i not? and i choose to put my hands over my ears whenever we score a try, or when one of my players is down injured, and sing "fings aint what they used to be". i promise to do it in your stewarded section gj then you can throw me out for being a miserable old git!(Sm13)

does anyone begrudge fund raising for the club? any money in is a good thing, you dont have to phone in nor pay extra for a pint, just look at it as our contribution to the cause.

no i dont begrudge raising money for the club and modesty really does forbid. honestly.

but equally i dont think we have to toe the club line siply because it is the club. sometimes things get up our noses and surely we have to be allowed to voice our opnions? otherwise we might just as well not have an unoffy site where the things that irritate can be scratched.

and if i'm in a minority, well thtas not going to kill me is it?

but that text announcement stuff is REALLY ANNOYING(Sm130)

The text 'vote' idea was discussed at a members forum as an alternative to MoM being picked by the day's sponsor. It's just a trial and ...

Your network operator will be charged £1 for each vote you register so the price you actually pay will depend on your network's text charging policy. The vote will be confirmed in a text back to you and the charge is made from when you receive that confirmation text.
30p from every votew will be paid to Exeter for the continued support of the club. (E&OE)

I wonder how many people actually voted yesterday? He had to announce a 5 minute extension to the voting time presumably because so few people bothered. If I want to give the club something extra financially I'd rather buy another draw ticket and know that the youth section is benefitting by most of that pound rather than pay the network provider 70p, Actually, I don't know anyone who sits in the same area of the grandstand as me and who texts for the MoM so if our bit is typical I imagine the experiment will perish anyway

ANY revenue stream should be investigated, if it works keep it, if it doesn't bin it.

As far as whether MOTM is a good thing or not, sorry but the implied comparison of under 7s to one of the toip sides in the country is laughable.

I agree it may disincentivise youngsters who never get it (arguable), but it is harmless fun otherwise. Chad got supporters player of the season on Saturday and rightly looked chuffed with the result, did the other guys stomp off in a huff, no they were pleased for him. I say let's ban all awards to individuals and get down to some proper communism!

"u7s through to senior side". gj, there's a slight tang of being deliberately obtuse in your reply. however, i take your point about professional players not stomping off into the mid west if they don't get the award. I'm guessing they don't give a stuff about the MoM and all they really want to do is go and have a shower and an ice bath (well, possibly not the ice bath).

however, my original and main complaint was about the number of announcements and how irritating they were and are. i hold to that view as, i suspect, do the other people around me on saturday. i agree with whoever it was above in that i will now deliberately buy an extra rafffle ticket or two to prove to myself i am neither mean nor mean-spirited.

matter closed as far as I'm concerned. so, I will now stroll off with my fingers in my ears, whistling "fings aint what they used to be". or, of course, 'the red flag' me being a redhot communist and all that . . .

sorry chader, you dont reel me in that easy. i enjoy the singing and the drumming, particularly when it is witty - the nottingham "we'll be playing you next year" was ok. our taunts at the dummies in nottingham (youre not singing any more) being good.

when us supporters really get noisily behind the team it is uplifting for them and us and is probably allowing a release of emotional energy that does the singer or drummer or trumpeter (although the nottingham guy was execrable) a power of good.

"more noise, less tannoy" is the chiefswatcher election slogan.
