Although I'm no great fan of evening kick offs it appears the Chiefs players really do enjoy them with the defeat of Clermont at Sandy Park being more evidence of this.

Although I'm no great fan of evening kick offs it appears the Chiefs players really do enjoy them with the defeat of Clermont at Sandy Park being more evidence of this. Although on a typically blustery Devon evening it looked like our French visitors had decided to take up from where they left off in our previous meetings by scoring 2 early tries. It would have been so easy for heads to drop and let the flood gates open but Exeter Chiefs are a different animal these days. The Chiefs just got their collective heads together and worked their socks off to pull off a fine 5 point victory.
New England boss Eddie Jones was in the stand to watch and must have been impressed with a few of our players and their never die attitude, much like that which he instilled in the Japanese team who beat South Africa.

Thomas Waldrom continued his try scoring form bagging a couple either side of half time. The first of these was oh so important as it sent the Chiefs in with just a 4 point defecit, which in that wind was negligable.
Toot Toot Two
With Thomas The Tank it's not just his ability to be in the right place to score but his all round game and the way he takes it to the opposition is so effective.
Tank on the charge
Jack Nowell also stood out with his all action running and ability to go around or even through tacklers. He is no different when playing wing or centre but I believe he is more effective at 13 because he gets to handle the ball more often. Jack may not be the quickest but his running style keeps opposition players guessing and opens defences up as it usually takes at least 2 to tackle him.
Coming through
The Chiefs forwards were well on top in the game with Damian Welch outstanding in the lineout on both our own and Clermont throw in. Jack Teandle provided really accurate throwing to assist this of course. Don Armand continued his good run of form and charged over for Chiefs third try.
One for The Don
Mitch Lees cemented the 5 points with what was the last play of the match and reinforced the power provided by the Chiefs back five.
Clermont players know it's all over now
With such an all round display from the Chiefs the backs must take great credit with Will Chudley and Gareth Steenson in particular. Steeno's kicking has always been excellant but that first half conversion was close to miraculous given the conditions.

A report short on words but I wanted to share these photos as much as anything else. Added to which I'm not sure I can find the words to describe how proud I am to be a Chief.
The guys have got it all to do again next week but who's to say they can't come home with another big WIN.

Can I give a round of applause for Damion Welch. An unsung hero. His line out work was fantastic (Clermont lost 6 line outs) and his one handed catch was skill of the highest order.
