...and move one step closer to Twickenham

Rugby Lions are one step away from a second consecutive Twickenham final after claiming the Midlands Junior Vase with a 23-15 victory against Shropshire outfit Cleobury Mortimer.

The visitors currently head the Midlands Four West (North) table with a record that is only marginally less impressive than Lions’ 100-per-cent return in the Southern equivalent and a fiercely competitive match remained deadlocked until the 31st minute when referee George Richardson awarded a penalty try and Gaz Bott slotted the extras.

That didn’t exactly open the floodgates but it prompted a surge that produced further tries for full-back Danny Campbell and winger Adam Attenborough and although an injury to Campbell forced a second-half revamp, Bott’s penalty secured a 20-point cushion.

Cleobury opened their account with a penalty, however, and, bolstered by home flanker Sunny Dhindsa’s sin-bin exile, they pegged back two tries via winger Ben Lewis, the first upgraded, to close the gap to 20-15.
