Blues Lift Bedfordshire Cup in Thrilling Derby Win Over Ampthill

Bedford Blues 40 – 24 Ampthill | Goldington Road, Saturday

Bedford Blues secured the inaugural Bedfordshire Cup with a commanding 40–24 victory over Ampthill, thrilling a packed Goldington Road and sending local supporters home with plenty to cheer about.

From the first whistle, the Blues set the pace. Quick ball and strong carries from the forwards allowed Bedford to dominate the early exchanges. Flanker Lewis Wells opened the scoring in the first quarter, finishing a sustained period of pressure. The stadium erupted.

“That first try set the tone,” said lifelong supporter Jane Atkinson. “The boys looked fired up — it felt like Goldington Road had come alive again!”

Ampthill fought back in the second half, adding two tries that briefly threatened to swing the momentum. But Bedford’s composure and execution proved decisive, particularly through their set-piece dominance and clever backline support. Full-back Tommy Hayes and centre Josh Barton crossed to extend the lead, sealing the victory and keeping the trophy in Goldington Road hands.

“You could see the experience and confidence in the team,” said fan Mark Dutton, who brought his two sons to the game. “Even when Ampthill came at them, the Blues stayed calm and finished their chances.”

Head coach Mike Rayer praised the squad’s character:

“Ampthill made us work hard, but the lads stuck to the plan. The way we moved the ball, controlled the forwards, and executed under pressure shows that the team is progressing well ahead of the Championship.”

The Way Forward

The victory provides a platform to build on:

• Attacking cohesion – Bedford created numerous opportunities, and refining the timing and support lines will be key for league matches.

• Defensive consistency – Ampthill’s second-half scores highlighted moments where line speed and communication could be tighter.

• Squad depth and fitness – maintaining intensity across the full 80 minutes and integrating bench players effectively will be crucial in a long Championship season.

Second-half defence – some lapses allowed Ampthill to get back into the game.

Breakdown discipline – a few penalties gave the visitors brief momentum.

Bench impact – substitutes must maintain intensity when called upon.
