Good to see JJ Tonks back in the mix.
That must have been some injury he sustained, feels like he has lost over a season.

Wonder what the rationale for not taking that kickable penalty to go 9 points up was. I applaude our ambition but there is a time and a place for pragmatism - and too often we don't see much of that from Saints.

I don't applaude the ambition, because that would be applauding stupidity. We have won one game in 5.

I was talking more about the way we try and play in general not that specific decision - which was idiotic.

Tommy V tweeted that Grayson was limping so possibly why we didn't take the kick

I don't think we rationalise.
We have no composure or game management and that has adly been the case for many years.
In tight games, we are all too often found wanting.

Not good to hear Ferguson now defending that decision on radio Northampton....
Given there was around 7(?) mins left, the 3 points would have put us 9 points up and that time and time again we go to the corner and fail to convert, for Ferguson to try and argue it was the right call simply because we scored a try from a driving maul earlier in the game seems a little worrying.

+1
Constant excuses.
Win the damn game first.
Rather than ask the question of when will we learn, I am actually becoming more and more concerned that we are incapable of learning (regardless of personnel).

When will we learn. You win the game first but no-one at the Saints seem to understand that. Pure stupidly.

More interested in player performances than the result

Zero interest in premier cup as a competition to be honest but it’s good to see some young players and get game time for others

You only hear what the coach says publicly. You don't hear the behind the scenes stuff. Being a leader myself I would have defended it publicly and then coached as to it being wrong. You have to build a united front.

Don't understand why Saints can have the pre-season matches streamed live but these matches aren't. I rather doubt that would keep spectators at home as opposed to going to the Gardens, and would serve to build more supporter involvement by watching more players in the squad have their go.

Saints and the other clubs do not hold the broadcast rights to these games therefore can't stream them.

Late in the game I can never understand not taking a kick that will put you two scores clear assuming it is a fairly easy kick and you don't need 5 points to get out of a group or something strange like that.

Attended the game and on many fronts the boys played well and were on top before yellows. They stood up when down to 13 and 14 for 15 mins. Only 1 try conceded at the death of that period.
Why Saints did not take the penalty for a 9 point lead was a crazy decision and you have to highlight coaching/game mgt. You could see some players wanted to take the penalty. Ferguson defending that is either poor coaching or protecting the decision maker. Either way it was plainly the wrong decision.

Just as an aside.. you don’t ‘take the points’, you attempt a kick at goal, there is no guarantee, the kick could well have been missed, particularly if your ten is hopping around on one leg as it seems he was.

The kick was in front of posts. James was able to kick to line out so I think he could of made it. Ferguson said they wanted to go for line out/Maul so I don't think he was hobbling around on 1 leg and that was not in the decsion process per ferguson. It was worth the risk to go 9 points out.
LI had same position last week and took the 3 points to go beyond 1 score.
Let hope they learn from it.

Tom Vickers said he was limping badly at the time and was at the ground. I wasn’t suggesting it influenced the decision I’m just saying no kick is guaranteed, so one shouldn’t assume 3 points. Plenty of kicks have been missed from in front.

The game shown was London Irish v Saracens on BT sport so as per other weeks during the season the game was shown, just wasn’t Saints.

Very true, but last week, by now the Saints highlights were available. Not so at the moment of writing.

If they're insistent on hanging on to their "rights" then I think it reasonable to be consistent?

There certainly was a player on the ground and the kick was delayed. it was certainly not "in front of the posts" , it was a bit to the side and quite a long way out. My immediate thought was that Grayson would go for it. The coaches were leaving decision making to the players, no-one rushed on with the tee on any of the penalty decisions. Fergie could clearly not criticise a young skipper's decision immediately after the game. Coles and Grayson spoke and it now seems clear that Grayson had a knock. There was no other kicker on the field. Grayson's penalty touch finder landed a good distance out, which seems to confirm his injury . Of course , it make it difficult to drive the penalty from there.

It was a good performance against a strongish side backed by a large crowd with a lot of drunken city types and Hurray Henrys on board. Who knows whether the two yellows were justified but defending with 13 men was always going to be hard. I could point to a few other decisions but I'll get someone jumping down my throat.

Our scrum and lineout with very good, Hutch was running the show in midfield and Wilkins looked very strong. The cards, a pack reduced by one when it had been dominating, an 80 metre break helped by an initial block and a kick that went over the dead ball line by inches..all factors. A win would have been great and it's a horrible feeling to lose but many good points. Only one or two of that squad will start at Bristol, with a few more on the bench. The cavalry will be back.

I realise that the Irish v Saracens game was live on BT. Saint Gordo asked why the Saints game was not live streamed by Saints and that was what I replied to!

Are any of these televised? I haven't seen any advertised. Granted I haven't looked closely, but would be nice.

I couldn't care less about the cup itself but the result is important in terms of confidence/momentum even with a very different side out.

The brief highlights don't really show much so I'm not going to second guess the decision not to kick a penalty but clearly if our only kicker on the field wasn't 100% that will have been a factor. However if that had been kicked there was still time for Quins to come back - had we scored a try then that would have been pretty much out of reach especially given more of the clock would have been used with the driving maul and conversion.

Just watched the match, not a good advert for Rugby and the way it seems to be progressing IMO. Sort of Pop Concert/Circus/Water Boys everywhere, and a bit of Rugby thrown in.
