Some interesting rotation there and a very strong bench. Would have liked to see Dingers in the centre for this one and Langdon starting at hooker, but that bench should provide some serious power and pace in the second half. Great to see Iyogun back, but a shame Augustus and Waller are now listed as injured - hopefully nothing too serious. Lawes presumably is rested?
The set piece went very well last week - hope for more of the same against what will be a physical Exeter pack. And I hope for better policing of the offside line than we saw last week, if Chiefs are up to their usual tricks.
Same as last week - try and run them backwards and forwards for the first 60mins, play the game in their half and concentrate of limiting penalties, then unleash a fearsome bench, and see what we can make of it all - just don't panic !!!!!!
I actually think that’s probably the weakest team we have out out maybe this season, definitely in last couple of months, feel we have rested some players, bit like Bath last week at Tigers
However it shows the strength of our squad now, as it’s not a weak team, if u get what I am saying
And if we are still in the game for last 20mins, what a bench!
I'm not too sure much is optional rotation as much as injuries (and a suspension) adding up now.
Hopefully Trokkie is just the precautions and isn't long term, James' suspension ends after this game and I think one or two are also there or there abouts on returns which would be timely with 6Ns looming. Not sure when squads get announced but I'd be surprised if we didn't lose one or two more on top of Mitchell (Freeman, Furbank, Coles, Pearson etc etc).
I'd agree on the gameplan - funny to see some of the comments on Twitter etc from 'fans' about half an hour into the Sale game, they all went pretty quiet towards the end. You're not going to run in tries from the start against the likes of Sale and Exeter, you have to be disciplined, take what you can and then take opportunities in the second half.
Also absolutely agree on the offside policing, that would very much help!
One or two in the pack will need to stand up and show some real leadership tomorrow - we know how Exeter play and they will be trying to milk penalties at every opportunity. Keep them at arms length for fifty minutes and then run them off their feet !
OldMarovian 21-23 are fascinating choices. Looks like Dowson wants to end, rather than start, the game with his best backs on the field.
Mate, the Saints entire bench is very strong. I agree, but think Dowson wants his strongest team on the pitch from 55 minutes onwards.
But this is good. The more usual starters need some load management in addition to giving more bench players their time. If Saints are within shouting distance at 55-60 minutes, I think there is an excellent shot to take this one. If not, then, well, never mind....
Santiago I'm not really up to speed on Exeter's strongest team this season, but I don't think this is it. Can someone clarify please.
A bit like yourselves we can chop and change quite a bit without the standard dropping. I'd say this is Exeter's strongest team (barring the injuries to Tschiunza, Hodge and Gray).
edit: only ? is probably at hooker where Frost has been excellent and Innard is probably the other incumbent.

Hi saints reading your comments , as some say unleash your bench after 50mins ,I believe we are the fittest team in the league so beware. It will be close and i would give you the nod. But dont underestimate this team they are a tough nut to crack, Enjoy the game and those travelling stay safe.
Rotation with Frost I think, we are missing good players and resting some as you seem to be, nobody really knows the strongest combinations yet as they all seem to jell.
Some of you are saying run Chiefs off their feet after fifty, have you seen any matches or looked at the stats, if you get a healthy lead in 1st Half you would probably take the spoils, but don't count on Chiefs running out of steam and fading.
safe journey all coming down.
Hopefully the flying in off feet and from sides will be policed as much as the constant offside defence.
Also we know they are a huge pack so perhaps not endlessly running straight into contact, only so many times you can bang your head into a brick wall.
Deesaint If we hadn’t had switched off for the simple score off their lineout it would be a far better outlook
But not writing Saints off
If we can get an early score second half
We can do it
To be fair the line out didn't look to go anywhere near 5 metres, yes I know play the whistle and all that but hard to defend that.
Still feels like we could come back or they could consolidate now back to 15.
How Slade avoided a red there, I have no idea. The mitigation was no way near significant enough to kill what was a ridiculously dangerous act. I am not happy about that.

Rose clearly thought it was red, asking the ref to have another look after he decided yellow.
Horrendous start reminiscent of the old days under boyd, but great mental strength again to come back. Building for a title charge just need to keep 2nd half intensity for all 80 mins.
I commented to my wife at 25 mins that we were going to get slaughtered. He seemed out gunned across the park, but then we go and win with a clutch of 6 tries! What do I know!!
Coles had a great game and was unlucky to knock on when there was a break and (wrongly) given off side for the charge down.
Munga is growing into a good player with Moon.
Tarek looks good and Davidson steady.
Graham quietly went about his work
Ollie - hatrick 👍
Furbank looks class.
Odendaal- I hope his noggin recovers. He needs more game time to be on a better wavelength with the other backs.
Brayley- ok. So I was shouting at the tv to get him subbed but he probably needs more game time.
The bench made a big impact and we were right to rotate. To attritional season not to. I appreciate it looked like we had kicked it up!
How can so few write so much nonsense . Makes me realise why I only bother to make so few comments . We go to fortress Exeter ( unbeaten by any Premiership side in nearly 2 years ) , rest numerous first choice stars ( either on the bench or not in 23 squad) missing several injured stars , manage to score a couple of try’s in first half to keep us in the game , start bringing on first team stars after 50 minutes and take Exeter to the cleaners in the second half . Rather than just say outstanding result for saints - including coaching team given need to rest key players got it 100% right - people moan about the first half . I give up .
Even when we were so far down after 20 minutes you could still believe Saints could turn it round. No panic, no silly penalties ,absorb the constant pressure and then turn in a superb exhibition of running skilful rugby to take all 5 points. What a difference to last season or two.Seems to me it’s not just the physical strength we have but also the mental go too attitude towards defence as well as our renowned attack

Yes, we turned it around rather well, but 25 mins in it looked like a calamity.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

To be fair, I'm sure the coaches were fuming with the first 20 mins. We were poor, no getting around it. But makes the comeback all the better. Original post seems a bit harsh. You can say the first 20 was awful, whilst praising the last 60 which was in complete contrast. Both aspects are true.

I said on your thread yesterday you will just get the nod, it proved right and so deserved. Nothing wrong with the chiefs they will learn and come back stronger maybe a dynamic no 10 is the finishing touch what do i no. Anyway glad we were beaten by the saints who are very honourable and a deserving top team . No excuses, the ref was ok it was just a small margin but a fantastic day out with my ST 5 yards from the pitch. wish you well on a top 4 spot and look forward to some future fixtures
Absolutely heartstopping stuff from Saints. Thanks lads. We are all on the Saints rollercoaster but what a ride it is. 🎢 😇
And a big shout out to the Exeter fans, on here and on their own board. So gracious towards Saints and complimentary of the wonderful rugby played by both teams. I particularly liked that they have not criticised their own young team after a narrow loss and have appreciated the hard work and top talent on display. Cheers Chiefs - true class.

The response alluded to the fact that you were the one talking nonsense. Perhaps you should go back to your previous quantity of posts, I'm sure there are plenty missing your pearls of wisdom. Of course you might end up getting kicked off again.......
Just back from the Ally Pally, couldn't believe the score, I watched part of the game during the interval, saw them score a try to take it to 26-0 (I think, small screen, no glasses) Then I saw us spill the ball when we were looking good for a try. When the time the show ended I thought I'd better check what the damage was and we'd won.
Looking forward to watching the recording tomorrow morning.
Baxter got it 100% right, on the Chiefs website before the match he said "we know they are capable of scoring right up into the last minutes.” sadly for him he didn't have an answer!!
To single out a few- Moony was class, Mitchell class, Haffar class and sleights lethal. Was amazed at the excessive chat for their winger Femi-Waboso and Sleights barely got a mention despite tearing them a new one.
Once we realise that kicking the ball to them only resulted in them running it back we for once changed tactics kept the ball in hand and Exeter didn't have an answer.
That was a cracking game for the uncommitted fan. I'm afraid I have to admit that I ended up becoming committed when I found myself rooting for Saints to nick it.
I feel FILTHY.

Duckonstilts I continue to think Sleightholm looks so much like Ben Cohen. Something very special about him.
No question Sleightholme has a bit of that X-Factor. He did so much more today that just the Hat Trick. One thing for sure Ollie and Cohen have a golden eye for the line. It's funny, but to me Ollie has a very different running style than his dad. Doesn't mean anything, just an observation...
Thanks all for the observations, reading all 90 odd on the train home from Birmingham after a long day, left home 7am this morning so hopefully back same day. I can assure you it was wonderful to be there and Chiefs supporters were in s state of shock at the end. Shoe Army 👞 ringing out in the stands.👌 . Definitely a game of 3 thirds-Saints appalling for first however brilliant for last 2. COYS😊💛🖤💚!
I think Sleighthome reminds me of Mike Brown, horrible nasty n aggressive n that’s a compliment
N Freeman and Mitchell changed the game when they came on, but for me Cole’s this season is a different player with his extra 6kg!
But Rory Hutchinson Ho probably isn’t a starter if all playing, was superb, his defence which was his weakness was brutal, his hands have always been class, as his step n spot a gap, but he also added the second receiver n the little kicks through! Underestimated imho!
An incredibly completely performance of a team that matures within 80 minutes. So cool to see. I hope this is Sleightholme realising his potential - the ferocity in how he plays is a sight to behold. What a time to be a Saints supporter. Bravo!
But ....... We need to sort our scrum out . It's a penalty nearly every time these days .
I was expecting Painter to add to our scrum problems when he came on
Particularly as he was up against Manny who was just making a comeback after a long layoff
Manny was rock solid and held his corner really well
I’m not sure how much difference a hooker makes to the performance of a scrum but the combination of Manny and Langdon stopped the penalties
I was watching down the pub so couldn’t hear the ref mic too well, what were mitigations for the yellow cards? They both looked red to me, certainly the 2nd was highly reckless

I couldn't hear either, and I was watching from the front room!
Both commentator and pundit insisted on chattering, not to mention the pitch-side music "adding" to the suspense. I got the impression from what bits I did hear that TMO David Rose thought Slade's offence was red and tried to talk the ref around.

Refs view was slade started shoulder and rose up to head contact, so gave yellow. Rose as tmo clearly thought otherwise, said he would show another angle after ref said yellow, but not his call ultimately. I thought this perhaps should have been red, however I thought overall the ref was quite sensible today. Everything looks awful slowed down imho. Other refs may have given hutch punishment for his head contact on the Exeter second row, games gone if he gets done for that as their player dipped so much, he's pretty much unable to tackle him without acting like he did. For me there has to be some level of scrutiny and onus on the ball carrier too, and thought woodthorpe came to a sensible decision.

As far as I could hear….
On Furbs- they said him pirouetting out of tackles was mitigation enough to not give Daffyd time to get lower and it wasn’t a ‘dominant’ tackle; and
On Burger- broadly they said the main force was through the elbow/chest and the head collision was more incidental. Particularly on this one I got the impression the on field team wanted to avoid giving a red because it was such a weird incident. Rose did ask ref to reconsider first point of contact (intimating it could’ve been head) but then accepted on field rebuttal of it being through elbow to chest before head.
Like herbie85 I thiught the ref applied a lot if common sense on a number of deciisions.
Certainly Hutch and the first yellow.
He also would not let Chiefs milk the scrum for penalties, which was a blessing to us.
Sleightholme is back to his best, very pacey and runs angry, so takes a lot of putting to ground.
Mitch is such a good player now and Moon transformed. Coles and ASY both gave incredible engines and work rates.
Chunya Munga is a real find and improving every game. The two young looseheads did well against the Chiefs pair of giant tightheads, — and Mitch must have thiught christmas came esarly when he saw Painter in front of him for the 3rd Sleightholme try!.
Hutch, Dingers, Freeman and Litchfield plus Burger give us quality in depth in midfield.
So many exciting and good players, and so many still not at their peak.
Well done Saints great entertainment, I do feel the yellows had the biggest effect on the game, you are to good to play 14 and allow 4 scores. Slade definitely a yellow but the first was as much a yellow as yours that the ref brushed away. So Imho it should have been one yellow for us or two and one using consistency, that would have put a different complexion on the outcome of the game.
Saying that and as it happened you have a great team and deserved the win in the end, hope to meet you again, we have improved since our last visit to you, and will continue to.
Thanks all.. I thought overall the ref had a good game, Hutch was right call for sure, would have been a harsh yellow. I think the other two on another day with a different ref could have both been red. The fact Burger failed his HIA is telling in terms of impact and force
Just watched highlights back. They definitely caught us cold early on we weren’t quite on it and Chiefs came firing out of the blocks. 12 months ago or more it could have been a truly depressing afternoon, the new resilience is great to see. Felt a bit for Braley, very rusty early on with no game time, got better as the game wore on, replacements made an impact which was the plan so well done Dowson & team.. again

I actually thought all three could have been red or nothing at all on a different day. Jenkins also failed his HIA so I guess that is also telling in terms of impact and force.
However we got the rub of the green on the calls and made full advantage of it with the points scored when they were down a man. All part of becoming a better smarter team and when you are winning you seem to get the calls go your way more often than when you are losing.

Generally happy with all 3 decisions, Jenkins, Slade and Hutchinson. There has to be a certain amount of common sense and rugby incident. In the Slade incident if he'd have been given the pass he wanted it would have been Odendall who was looking at a red.
The game was so good I'm watching the re-run now. I think it will do us some good as there were obviously some defensive issues around the front of the lineout that can be rectified after this game.

Good point about lineout, is this a Chiefs tactic generally or something they spotted that was particular to us

Almost certainly a combination of both. Most teams will have a series of plays they use over a season and will use them depending on how the opposition line up or defend.
The remarkable thing about the match is how it followed the evident script penned by Dowson and the coaching team in the squad selection and timing of substitution. Well done to the coaching team!!
I'd love to know what (in terms of input) has changed in the past fortnight.
I don't know if it feels the same to Saints supporters but to me they are the first games for an age where there seems a very particular strategy for the game rather than "just" play your best.

I think the coaches are growing into their roles. They clearly understand the squad to a level I don't think we have seen for a very long time.
To have the confidence to a) plan a specific game plan and b) look to proper rotation in numerous positions, is an eye opener - to me.
The players are clearly enjoying it. They have introduced the new guys gradually, but effectively. And for the first time, in a very long time, the signings appear to all be bringing something new to the group.
A lot easier when you have depth across all positions, you are able to juggle resources to suit. Reading Dowson post match comments Exeter are the most prolific team in the league for scoring early points so this may have influenced the strategy. Hold them for the first half and unleash the bench, not sure 26-0 was part of the script though
Dows in his post match interview was clear that it was not the plan.
On previous threads, the recuitment has been mentioned and it does seem that we moved well to pick up some real gems from the clubs that we gave (sadly) lost.
Someone was tracking those situations and squads to be able to move so quickly and decisively.
Rewatching the match back has emphasised how sublime our handling was in places - the speed, awareness and precision when moving the ball wide to beat the Exe defenders on the outside was impressive. Two excellent cross kicks as well. Among the starters I thought Coles, Graham, Sleights and Furbs were standouts, while Mitch was pure class off the bench. Seven from seven, considering the opposition and that four have been tough away matches, is some run of form. Let's make it eight next week.
I too have just watched the full game back. I must say that I though the ref was outstanding. There will always be debatable decisions but he was very clear explaining what he saw and the reason for his decisions. He penalised the off-feet at the ruck and the in at the side, both Chiefs’ standard plays. The offside rush defence was very marginal in the first 20 mins but in fairness you do have to rely on the assistant refs unless you have eyes in the back of your head and are able to see in three directions at one time. The assistant’s never going to flag a marginal call!
Given the mountain we allowed Chiefs to build for us to climb I thought we showed real character and class to work our way back into the game. It’s great knowing that we have the firepower to create tries from nothing, just like we did ten years ago in Jim’s pomp!
