The first 5 minutes

The Players

Personally I will be going for Deso this week. I thought his efforts in the lineouts and scrum were bery good. Chris Hoddle

 

I'd go for Deso, which will please his Dad, he was the difference this week in the lineout that secured and stole a lot of good ball.   Chris the Saint

 

Matt Lord. Never stopped working, indeed never stopped. Top man for me. MAV

 

Delilah doesn't seem to have sapped his strength!! Go Wookie!  St Marlowes

 

For me Matt Lord's performance was immense and deserving of MOTM. Buzzard was superb but the man who made the difference was Rob Hunter. It was good to see Robbie back in and when the going got ugly he was there, fronting up………   … But overall it's Wookie for me. WMS

 

Rob Hunter had a great game, stealing line-out ball at least twice. Handyman was fantastic in defence - a certain try saver!  Deso held the pack together at 8  But for me, Wookie was DA MAN!  Beef

 

So its between the Wookie and the Buzzard with honourable mentions for a front five that fronted up to an opposition who thought that they could muscle these kids out of the game  Old Pete

 

There has to be mention for Rob Hunter, he was a bit of an unsung hero yesterday. He was nicking the Wasps ball at lineout time at will in the second half and his first up defence was impeccable. Dan P Cooper

 

The New Boy

 

Clarke did very well with some intelligent play that would have been expected of someone with Ben's experience. His try was an added bonus which no one can take from him ... LOM

 

I think Clarkey deserves a mention for the debut from heaven. Smurfomatic

 

in honesty mine goes to clarke. he never let go of a tackle he was the tackle on roiser in the opening minutes. he score a nice interception try too. TAV

 

 

The Other side

 

When Trev threw what seemed like the fiftieth wonky lineout some wag in the Shrubs shouted, "Bend it like Trevor!" I larft.  Dan P Cooper

 

However the real damage was done by the Wasps 12, he looks a top find. Rich St. Joe & Niamh’s Dad

 

Set Piece play

 

I think there were a few major differences. Firstly the lifting was far superior to last week; a good throw becomes a bad throw with weak lifting. Secondly we seemed to read their calls as easily as Bath did ours. Thirdly the lineout is very much a confidence thing, once that has gone you try to hard and tense up and it all goes to pot. Finally once a team sees a weakness in the opposition they will target it for all they are worth, rather than making a sort of token effort. Ajack

 

the determining factor was wasps lineout ; ours didn't look all that wonderful, but deso in particular, and also rob hunter had a bit of a feeding frenzy on the wasps throw.   our scrum looked fairly poor ; we were wheeled the wrong way more or less at will, so no proper backrow moves possible so both our 9's were no threat there.  broonie

I disagree about the pack - we kept our discipline, we were not shoved around the park as we were by Glos and the Sharks. Claire Jones

 

The line out ( ours that is!) got better as the game wore on and I'm disappointed that Rob Hunter wasn't in the MOTM list. Stockers

 

The Defence

 

the defence is frightening me most at the moment , however…    ……the inside of our 12 channel has been ruthlessly exploited by first bedford, then henry paul for glaws and now the wasps 12 for whom i have insufficient keys on this keyboard.  broonie

 

I was completely horrified by the great big kink that seems to have appeared in our defensive line since last season, Ben Dover

 

The comments about 7, 10 & 12 are absolutely spot on - every game I've watched so far has been a horror story as far as midfield defence goes. I'm still not convinced by Shane's general defensive qualities (irrespective of his attacking brilliance!)  Gregor

 

Have to agree re- shane unfortunatly, he does seem to be a bit on the slight side in defence. His attacking is fantastic, but I have seen him miss a few tackles and get brushed of by alot more. James Simons-Boswell

 

But as the game wore on Erinle didn't have the freedom he used to set up the first try and Saints defence was reorganised to counter that particular threat.
It wasn't perfect by any means and still needs work but the ability to adapt was noticeable. Stockers

 

On the plus side our spirit was good, with some self belief returning after the Bath debacle. For me Rob Hunter had a stormer which I have to say I was suprised at.   We did, however, look exposed in midfield from a wasps team who lined up very deep, giving them the chance to run at our defence. Number 7

 

All round passion and other matters

 

well passion for the jersey & Saints triumphed!!..well done to Rats, Hynsey & our forwards for coming back today after last week's performance-I was a big critic but salute them tonight  BBF

 

Forwards were not the greatest we have ever sesen but they worked and fought for every scrap of ball   We were also quite disciplined - it was a match where there was quite a biot to provoke the more emotional players but amazingly both Foxy and Robbie stayed clear of the cards.  Old Pete

 

thought yesterday was a good day at the office. It was a solid, more than flash performance and demonstrated maturity. Paul Flatt

 

Yesterday showed the steel of Saints' backbone used as a springboard for the flair and playing style that Wayne is patiently building. "Pride in the Jersey" is an often overused phrase, but it was there in bucketloads yesterday.  St Marlowes

 

At home

 

I thought both teams looked to have fragile confidence yesterday……    ……In the end the psychological safety of home advantage seemed to be the difference.  Rich St. Joe & Niamh’s Dad

 

 

And Finally

 

All of Wasps supposed advantages amounted to were a hill, well not even a hill, of beans. We were battered - I mean physically not that we yielded up a host of try-scoring or penalty opportunites - and we came out of it with our heads up and the points in our pocket.  OddShapedBalls
