Opportunity to provide feedback to Sportnetwork

Feature, not a bug!

By TonyTaff
August 31 2019

I have been chatting with the guys at sportnetwork, mentioning both concerns with the functioning of a recent upgrade and the absence of functionality that is available on competing platforms. I am pleased to say thay are open to receiving feedback from our users.

Please provide feedback of the User Acceptance Testing that users have performed, albeit unintentionally! It would be helpful if you were to mention the device(s) that you were using to access the network.

Furthermore, please also provide suggestions for functionality, not currently provided by Sportnetwork.

[I tend to use my aging laptop and Edge, with (please don't laugh) the original and excellent Tesco's Hudl tablet as backup!]

I'd like us to stay, especially if the excellent Bath site and others remain.

The first question I have: is the recent engagement from Jon likely to continue or will we return to the more normal (lack of) interest. I apreciate that SportNetwork provides the site free of charge and doubt that it is a great earner but better support is essential. I don't in truth understand the previous security issue - my password is only used here and I doubt that my posts have much value to anyone! Adds and the Privacy pop-ups have never troubled me - I don't use an Addblock and find it simple to ignore them. *touches wood*

Individual preference wrt the appearance of the site will probably vary greatly, though the initial changes with all the faults and appalling use of colour showed both lack of knowledge of the old version and dreadful judgement. I much prefer a quick and simple to use site with clear content and navigation (unlike the new Fish where slow to load gimmicks with minimal detail have taken over). I feel we have that here in the main. I'd suggest:

* the message list page is not as clear as the old version when searching for old posts. I like that we have the 4 columns (unlike e.g. Tigers with "views" in the first column) though the two middle ones could be narrower. Did the old version have the title in bold, author normal but smaller font? Those threads containing new post being bolded is an unnecessary duplication of the resurrected new tag. Colour works well with e.g. Bath blue, but not our red.

* I like our smaller font size wider page with the absence of avatars and the ability not to display "signatures", though the font size on stickys (e.g. here) seems too large and sometimes varied (see the Strettle post).

* The "Who is online" and "where are they" notices on the right no longer seem to work for me. EDIT - they're back! Though both go to "where is everybody".

* The "new" link has three faults imo. If it takes us to the first post of a thread (perhaps a brand new one) it goes to the top of the page - the first post would be better. Secondly, for me, on a long thread the first new post will often appear at the top of the screen but then (perhaps as some resizing happens to earlier posts) gets pushed down 1 to 4+ posts, often offscreen. Thirdly, on pages with avatars new is not displayed.

* The link to the latest post via "last poster" was useful when the "new" link didn't work. Is it now?

* I'm repeating myself, but I think the large title and "post started by" at the top of each thread is a pointless duplication of what is in the first post.

* Another repetition - I still find the page has too much white. Would a pale grey background (as in the old version?) to post headers with the poster/date right justified break up the page better?

* It would be far moe useful in my view if clicking on "next thread" automatically took you to the first new post in that thread (last post if no new ones) rather than the first.

* Being able to add colour to the background to text would be useful as would a simple to use formatting (L/R/Centre justified tabs e.g.) option.

* I quite like the "agree", "disagree" and "funny" tags on Quins' site.

I'm now off to get a life!

Cheers mate.

I hope Jon responds positively!

The new design is very much "in your face" - the old design was old fashioned but at least subtle. Good points made in the thread - thanks.

I personally am happy with this site, apart from the odd gripes about user-friendliness. However, a major plus is disappearing as more clubs migrate to other sites, thereby removing the attraction of there being a single access point for people who want to visit other clubs' threads to read and perhaps contribute there. Perhaps this site is either poor at marketing itself or is not as good as the ones that migrators are tending to prefer.

A few thoughts below on both computer and mobile. I find the mobile issue remains significant. Handling ads on iphones using Chrome (my platform) is harder, and so:

*[Mobile] - The side ad takes up 1/4 of the screen, which pretty much renders it non-functional. The bottom ad is fine
*[Mobile] - The screen jitter-loads, with it settling after a second, then a few seconds later jittering down as other things load "upscreen". This frequently leads to hitting the wrong things.
*[General] - Innings is right that the big plus has always been having 11/12 clubs in the same forum. Obviously there have been departures, more recently to a viable competitor (i.e. one that also has all clubs in the same forum). If a majority of active club forums went there, and it's otherwise similar, I'd be inclined to go. That's more of a pressure to improve point than a specific piece of advice
*[Computer] - way too much white space on the right. I'd suggest some expansion, then make the rest not white
*[Both] - we don't need both bolding and a "new" tag, I prefer the former
*

The guys at Sportnetwork are aware of the competitive threat.

This is their opportunity to meet it.

Please keep the constructive comments coming!

Please can we cease the irritation of having to agree to the privacy notice almost every time one opens the site? I am highly unlikely to change my privacy opinions in between one opening and the next, and it is a minor, but cumulative, irritant that I am asked to confirm that.

Which device and OS are you using? I don't see that notice.

Nor do I TT !

Could I add that on the mobile the various posts on the message thread are separated by a red bold border around the delete-merge etc options (not sure how this comes up if you aren't an admin though) but this makes each post much easier to read. On the PC the header to each individual post is much less distinct and it is harder to read. I think I could live with the outline being in red, or maybe each header shaded VERY pale red (to distinguish it from the grey of the quotes) because that would make the thread much clearer.

I use apple devices (phone and tablet) and regularly get the privacy message. I agree would be good if it went.

I suspect one reason why we are losing other teams is the requirement here to have a new ‘story’ every week or two.

I broadly agree with the comments earlier in the thread.

I use Apple as well, and the privacy stuff appears about every third opening of the page, and then occasionally mid-way through a skim through other club sites.
