Yorkshire – A Recipe For Disaster

For the second time in two weeks, Yorkshire Carnegie made the short trip to the south of our beloved county. They made both trips on the back of bonus point victories the previous week, while both opponents had been on the wrong end of a thrashing at Worcester in their previous outing.
And, today, just as at Doncaster, Carnegie were made to look a very second best against a strong, and determined Rotherham Titans. Even though the Titans final try came in stoppage time, 6 tries to 3 doesn’t do the hosts justice. They did everything better and quicker than their visitors, and most of all took more advantage of the windy conditions. Even a Ryan Burrows hat trick of tries couldn’t add any comfort to a poor display, and it was a very jubilant Lee Blackett who spoke to us after the game.
After a good start for Carnegie, they took a scrum against the head, and stole a line out, things went downhill. Roth scored after 11 minutes when they shipped the ball at speed to cross in the corner, and they doubled the lead after a series of pick and go drives on the visitors’ line. Neither try was converted, but Yorkshire found a way back into the game when they turned down a vey kickable penalty to go for the corner. The reward came when a powerful drive took Ryan Burrows over the whitewash. Leeds had the wind at their backs, and another penalty in the same position saw them go for the corner again. This time however, they messed up and when they conceded a penalty Roth cleared their lines comfortably, and increased their lead with a penalty with the last kick of the first half.
Despite playing with the wind behind them the only highlight of what was a fairly even first half was a terrific mazy 40 yard run from Sam Egerton, but he was hauled down before any support could get to him. To go in 13 – 5 down left the visitors with an uphill task in the second half. Paul Hill came on as a replacement but it wasn’t long before he was off again, Sir losing patience at the persistent offending of the men in white.
From then on things went rapidly downhill. Roth used the wind to play for position, and did it very well. They dominated all over the park, and Carnegie had no answer as they became more disjointed than they have all season. As ever, replacements brought fresh legs, but not much improvement, and Roth took full control. As usual, when Leeds did have the ball they made silly errors, forward passes, knock-ons etc, and conceded penalties with increasing regularity.
Roth crossed the whitewash four times in the final period, but Leeds showed some fight, and skipper Ryan Burrows crossed twice more to complete a hat trick.
It is tradition on here to give a bottle of pop to the man of the match, so here goes. Alex Reider, Curtis Wilson, and Mark Tampin would all have been considered had they not been wearing a different coloured shirt. Goss and Georgiou worked tirelessly in the backs, while up front, Williams and Buzz kept the hosts on their toes. But Sam Egerton is taking the prize, another lively display, some great breaks, and one which makes me hope he will get a contract at Headingley. Well played Sam.

For the first time ever I thought why do I bother.
The most influential player on the field was the Roth scrum half, his speed of delivery really got them on the front foot and with the 10 they made a formidable half back pairing, yes Egerton is an exceptional runner but he looks like a sevens player and Grimoldby had a howler I'm afraid.
Roth just looked more up for it.
That second half was more dire than a very dire thing indeed, we were tortured.
On a brighter note Chris G had a fine game.

Selection right or wrong, that team was more than capable of matching roth. There is not excuse in getting the basics wrong and being out fought for 80mins
But collectively they perform. Currently we dont. Thats the difference.
The difference was - as at Doncaster - the opposition wanted the win more than the Carnegie players. Their body language, especially in the second half was poor, to say the least.
Why this happens, I don't know. I'm not going to blame TMG: he's not dropping the ball/giving away penalties/etc. Sad to say, it's the motivation of many players that seems to be lacking.

I think the whole squad and the coaches need to sit down AGAIN, and ask themselves what they want out of the season and why they dont fight as a group. Not playing to your potential when it really matters must really hurt them.
I too wouldn't swap any of our players for the ones we let go, though agree with Hax that Rieder might be in my 22. Last week proved that.
There is something about the environment that is not right though. The penalty count against us was horrific. It is almost as if we want to play one way, and when that doesn't work we lose all ability to make the right decisions on the pitch.
Roth did the basics well and used the conditions. They were a unit and must have thought all their Christmases had come at once to find us so inept.
Painful
Seems to me that the staff thought a forwards game was in order yesterday but that couldn't be further from the truth, as Roth showed.
With two of the best players in the team on the wings, it wouldn't hurt to give them the ball every now and again.
Lack discipline and desire = disappointment or is it depression?
Fact it that this season is a write off, play offs are unlikely so we need to build for next year. It is time to rebuild, let's make the tough decisions in terms of coaching and playing staff then aim for promotion next year.
That however will be tough as one of the strongest teams in the league will be hurting next year and will have a point to prove and a budget exceeding ours.

As a friend who does not post pointed out the best player for us in the last 2 games has been the non playing professional Sam Egerton, and one presumes he is not being paid much either.
On a different note the ball handling skills of the Rabbitohs from Aus was wonderful to watch......and 8 years ago they got the wooden spoon in the NRL. J. Lo's influence last year equally produced exciting rugby. Perhaps Leeds should take note.
That's two beatings in this years Championship from both of them and Saturdays debacle was worst than at Castle Park two weekends ago.
How can we play well against Moseley, better against Nottingham and then follow them up with such dire performances as those witnessed by the faithful few (probably getting fewer?) who were at Castle Park and Clifton Lane?
Such is rugby.
However, the real competition was with the Cow Pie of Donny v the Meat pie at Rotherham.
While a big fan of Donny Cow Pie I give the award to the Rotherham Meat Pie this season, by a short slop of the gravy scoop!

Please sign Egerton (as Farmer Tyke says - best player on the field). Less convinced on Grimoldby - some pretty poor decision making. We were much better with Leonard back on the pitch. I also think the other replacements had a positive impact but it was too little too late. IMHO Nilson must start next week
