We are two games into the preseason and the squad have had two tough games. Next up are the Lions. Before you start panicking it is not those Lions but the ones from Leicester!
Leicester Lions, coached by our former director of rugby Andy Key, are a couple of divisions below us so Brush is going to play academy lads beefed up by squad members who did not get game time in the matches against Bath and Wasps. This seems eminently sensible to me as we do not want the first team squad burnt out before the trip to Ealing.
We are getting titbits from the club's media people about how well the new guys are settling in and the positives we can take from the spanking at Coventry.
In the end preseason will be forgotten when the first league game gets underway on September 3rd. Now the Olympics are out of the way we can focus on our favourite winter sport. I am getting excited already!
Having seen both the first two matches, I wonder if Brush can really afford to select a "academy squad-player" team? With all due allowance to the high quality of the opposition played so far, we undoubtedly have key players seriously under-performing. Perhaps their confidence has also taken a dent. I await Brush's selections but feel that there are a number of players who would benefit from the feel-good factor of being part of a win.
