Important games coming up...

By WPL
January 8 2020

Well that wasn’t a festive period I was expecting from the club, there is a lot of good news coming out from an otherwise bleak season. I’ve stated on posts here before I do have sympathy for Martyn Wood, he had a pretty thankless (if not impossible) task. The club have decided to go with Phil Davies which has brought a lot of positivity mixed in with strong hints to a name change.

So we’re feeling all positive, I looked at our fixtures again….ouch! I’m not sure PD could get much harder a start than Pirates away followed by Newcastle at home, then it gets so much easier with a trip to Jersey. For avoidance of doubt my tongue was planted firmly in my cheek for that last statement.

It got me thinking, realistically are we going to get anything other than a losing bonus point or two from these games…unless of course the #GirlsOnTour can get the ex-yorkies on the beer the night before the game, I can’t see it.

So that’s three games gone, fortunately that is still not even halfway through the league season. It’s then followed by I’m going to say two key games which will tell us if we have any hope of staying up. Nottingham at home (Friday evening beers anyone?) followed by Ampthill at home.

Why are these games so key, well they are not against teams at the top of the table, they are at home, PD will have had nearly a month with the team – but I would think they could be at risk of being one of the teams that finish below us? I honestly believe Doncaster and Bedford’s position is false (despite the noises on the Bedford board, they have a load of injuries). Nottingham are 14 points clear of us, Ampthill 15 (as are Hartpury). So let’s just say neither ourselves nor the other two pick up anything between now and those games. We manage to win them both, all of a sudden we could be within a bonus point win of them – we have momentum, they don’t. Last two games of the season Nottingham and Bedford away – what would I give to be in with a shout of possibly staying up. Can you imagine how unpopular we would be then?

OK, so let’s put the realistic hat on, we manage to scrape together a couple of victories this year but it’s not enough.

What does the future hold for us? Well to be honest some of the other noises coming out of the club suggest that there is a club next year which is not something I was expecting. Yes the term “sustainable” is mentioned, I read that as part time still, but I’m keeping the positive vibes going, we have a DoR who is respected in the game, who will have time to build a squad and a team! If we can keep some of the players who have shown promise this year, who knows what we could do next year...

Not sure the #girlsontour are up for the challenge. Down to Pirates on Saturday and back after the match with work on Monday (although tbh I am off but could be called on if something we're expected to happen kicks off) is going some. Mind you, I never been one not to rise to the challenge.

If you are successful (Or maybe you do a “proper job”) then I’m sure we will all chip in for the expenses ;-)

The trains to Penzance are tricky at present with an intermediate bus shuttle (over 8 hour journey time) so perhaps we can let the #girlsontour off for this one!

Nice article WPL.

I was just saying the same thing to Almo yesterday about "sustainable". It certainly looks like we will be around next season which is indeed a pleasant prospect albeit in Nat 1 ( barring a PD induced miracle).

If i was offered Relegation and a definite place in National one only a couple of weeks ago would have ripped your hand off as it looked much bleaker

Hope PD can work a miracle however would we be competetive next year? or same struggles?
opportunity to rebuild and local trips Hull/Darlington/Sale/Rotherham etc (Dependant on them staying up) might be whats needed?

with a chance to rename/rebrand not the worst outcome in the world

Good write up WPL.

IMHO results so far suggest that we are too far off the pace to get the points we would need to pull off a miraculous escape, even with PD at the helm.

However, whilst 're-invigourated' is too strong a word, Phil's second coming has compelled me to make the trip to Headingley for the first time this season to at least see for myself against Newcastle.

Just reading the twitter updates looked like the scrum struggled and penalty count increased on last week?

Heavy defeat after last week

Another tough result and a long journey home, hope they keep their heads up and stay positive.

Definitely one step backwards last night. Though a five day turnaround with a long journey ( team came out on the 10amish from Manchester on Friday am). Els continues to impress. Metcalf punches over his (tiny) weight and will take anyone on and back himself.

It was absolutely freezing cold last night - 3C with a bitter wind from the east. Goodness knows what the wind chill was. Even the club house was stone cold. I wonder how much that made a difference and caused the poor handling?

This is how cold - our teeth were chattering. Mr Gel left at halftime. I stuck it out but was still trying to get warm under the duvet (stop it at the back) at 1am.

I think there was far too much read into last weeks game against a second string Newcastle team. Their first team are not actually very good as evidenced by their struggle at Nottingham last night. This is a very poor championship this season. As to YC the reality is every match is a game of attack v defence. They defend with great spirit for long periods and eventually capitulate. They have no attacking dimension to their game at all.

Yeah I agree, also, what wasn't taken into account last week was that, imho, the referee inadvertently helped us out by not letting the game flow.

We've a long way to go yet but we are taking baby steps forward.

I have to admit to being a bit worried about GelBel's comment of a step back, but then again, Jersey are no mugs and it's not a good trip to make with minimal expense either.

Surprisingly there was a semi-positive comment on Rolling Maul from a Jersey fan saying we gave a good account of ourselves despite our age. Saying on that form we would finish top half of Nat 1 next year.

Nottingham sneaked a bonus point at home to Newcastle, maybe something to do with Newcastle being down to 12 at one point. Yes they did play a 2nd string against us, but thats still going to be a very good side.

On to Friday night...

Jersey are no mugs? Not won at home all season before Friday.
Top half of National 1. Wow, what an achievement.

The whole episode is embarrassing.

And, before anybody has a go, I supported this club through thick and thin for many years, and whilst there were more downs than ups, at least everybody knew exactly where the club stood. This is very very sad.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

Don't think anyone will have a go but maybe contact HMV before they go totally bust, they have a good returns policy on broken records

Turns out Jersey not winning at home all season was journalistic licence - they actually meant in 2020. (Sm145)

We have a new DoR who is going to give us his vision for the club. Surely it is premature to speculate now?

The problem YC have is that the teams immediately above them are all of a similar standard and therefore keep acquiring points off each other. I reckon a minimum of 7 wins from the games left are needed to have an outside chance of survival. Unlikely in the extreme. Therefore this season should be about trying to build a team that will be competitive in the league below. A few short term Namibians are pointless. Players with experience in National One are required. It is a tough league as Rotherham are finding out.
