Hatley to lead England Saxons in USA opener

London Irish prop Neal Hatley will captain England Saxons in the opening match of the Barclays Churchill Cup against the USA at Edgeley Park this Friday, 18 May (live on Sky Sports 3, kick off 7.45pm)

Hatley, who will become the Exiles' Academy Manager next season, has been given the task of leading a squad light on international experience but brimming with youthful talent and Premiership experience, by coaches Jim Mallinder and Rugby World Cup winner, Dorian West.

Whilst the uncapped Hatley, an inaugural 2003 Barclays Churchill Cup winner, provides the experience up front, the backline features two capped players in London Irish’s Shane Geraghty, who lines up at inside centre, and Dan Scarbrough of Saracens, who will wear the number 15 shirt.  The match also provides an opportunity for Sale Sharks’ scrum half Richard Wigglesworth to take the pitch in front of his home crowd.

Said England Saxons coach Jim Mallinder, ”Despite our youth and lack of international experience, this is a side with a great deal of Guinness Premiership experience.  Many, like Neal Hatley, Kevin Sorrell, Dan Scarbrough, Delon Armitage, Topsy Ojo and Ryan Lamb, have been regulars for their clubs throughout the season and have performed consistently well at that level.

“Like us, all the players are excited by the challenge of coming together to take on an experienced side like the USA. They are a tough team who have already qualified for the Rugby World Cup in September.

“We’ve chosen Neal to lead the team.  He is vastly experienced and, following another very successful season at London Irish, is well respected by all the squad.  His experience and leadership will be crucial to us on the pitch.”

Jordan Crane will start at number 8 following his early release by Leicester Tigers ahead of the Heineken Cup this weekend.  The replacements bench will not be confirmed until nearer the match.

Re: England Saxons Hatley to Lead in against USA
Barclays Churchill Cup spreads the rugby word around the world

The Barclays Churchill Cup is already an internationally recognised rugby competition but this year the tournament will be broadcast to thousands more people around the globe in a worldwide broadcast deal announced today. Sky Sports are the host broadcasters of the tournament which is being hosted by England for the first time in it's five year history. In addition the matches will be televised (live and in highlight form) to North America, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Middle East.

Sky Sports are broadcasting seven of the nine matches live to thousands of homes in the UK, including the main Barclays Churchill Cup Final which is being staged at Twickenham on Saturday 2nd June. The tournament
is contested by six teams - England Saxons, the New Zealand Maori, Scotland A, Ireland A, Canada and USA, and will this summer act as a genuine chance for players to try and earn selection to their senior teams ahead of September's Rugby World Cup. The New Zealand Maori are the current Barclays Churchill Cup champions having defeated Scotland A in last year's final which was held in Edmonton, Canada.

The tournament is sponsored by Barclays and is supported by the International Rugby Board. Originally formed following England's tour to North America in 2001, the aim of the Barclays Churchill Cup is to help grow and develop rugby union in North America. It has been hosted in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, San Francisco and Edmonton and will next summer be staged in both Ontario and Conneticut.

Since it's introduction in 2003, it has helped provide high level competition for both USA and Rugby Canada as well as attracting thousands of spectators across North America. In addition to Barclays and the International Rugby Board the tournament has attracted a number of high profile sponsors including British Airways, Marriott hotels, Ford, Gilbert, Nike and O2.

Speaking on today's broadcast deal announcement, Paul Vaughan, Commercial Director of the Barclays Churchill Cup said, "It is great news for the tournament to receive such global coverage. This is a very exciting year for the tournament as there is so much riding on the players as they look for World Cup selection. All the countries have named strong squads and it promises to be another highly competitive tournament. There is already a following for the tournament in North America so it is pleasing that the growing number of rugby fans in the US and Canada will still be able to enjoy the matches on the television. We are also hopeful of announcing further broadcast deals over the coming days which will deliver the Barclays Churchill Cup to even more people around the world."

The Barclays Churchill Cup kicks off on Friday (18th May) with England Saxons against the USA (7.45pm kick off, Edgeley Park). Call 08712 220 120 for tickets.
