Twickenham Stadium this weekend joined hundreds of other towns and cities across the UK to celebrate the handover of the Olympic flag to London.

At 2.30pm on Sunday, the London 2012 flag was raised above the Home of England Rugby to mark the handover of the Olympic Flag to the Mayor of London Boris Johnson during the closing ceremony of the Beijing Games.

Boris Johnson who featured last week in the BBC programme ‘Who do you think you are?’ has traced his ancestry back to be a direct descendant of King George II although illegitimately.  And due to this fact he is related to nearly every Royal House in Europe.

The Olympic Flag was raised by John Clark, who is retiring after 26 years as the Twickenham Stadium’s Clerk of the Works.

Said Clark, “Our athletes have been so successful in Beijing that this seems like such a small contribution to make.

“But it was an honour to be asked and I was very pleased to do it.  I hope that it will mark the kick off of an even more successful campaign for London 2012.”

After living next to the stadium since the age of 17, Clark took over his role in 1982, when his first ever match, England v Australia on January 2, also featured Erica Roe, the famous Twickenham streaker.

But despite working at more than 250 matches and events over more than a quarter of a century, Clark hopes retirement will help him to enjoy many more.

“After such a long time it will be a wrench to leave”, he admitted.  “But hopefully it will mean I can finally sit down and enjoy watching a rugby match and let someone else take the strain, that’s something I’ve never been able to do!”
