England make four changes to Under 20 EPS

ENGLAND have made four changes to the Under 20 Elite Player Squad ahead of this season RBS Under 20 Six Nations.

London Irish centre Tom Homer, Gloucester Rugby prop Shaun Knight, Bath Rugby flanker Josh Ovens and Leicester Tigers full back Greig Tonks have been drafted into the 32-man group.   Replacing the injured Rob Milligan (Northampton Saints), and Phil Swainston (Leeds Carnegie), Mike Stanley (Saracens) and Sam Smith (Harlequins).

Homer is called up during a season which saw him score two tries on his debut for London Irish against Saracens in November. Ovens has featured in Bath's first team squad this term, Tonks returns from a knee injury sustained against Italy last season, and Knight is dynamic young tight-head currently dual registered with Cinderford.

They join a squad attempting to emulate last season's Grand Slam winners and kick-off their RBS Under 20 Six Nations games against Italy at Worcester on February 6.

England are also building up to the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan this summer, where they face the host nation, Scotland and Samoa in the pool stages.

"The four guys coming in deserve their chance and we're expecting a lot from them,"said England Under 20 coach Mark

"The challenge now is for them to is to push for places in the 22 and into the starting team as well."I'm very excited about the group we've got and the work that's already taken place this season.

"We've had some good opportunities to get to work with the players in conjunction with their clubs as well as doing team-building work in camps at Lympstone and in Portugal earlier this season.

"Now we'll be doing some fine-tuning at the end of the month for a week at Bisham Abbey before going up to Worcester at the start of our Test week before playing Italy."

Tonks takes the number of players in the squad already capped at this level to 11, having started the games against Wales and Italy last year.

The other survivors are forwards Calum Clark (Leeds Carnegie), James Clark (London Irish), Graham Kitchener (Worcester Warriors), Courtney Lawes (Northampton Saints) and Tom Sargeant (Harlequins), and backs Luke Eves (Bristol Rugby), Rob Miller (Newcastle Falcons), Charlie Sharples (Gloucester Rugby), Seb Stegmann (Harlequins) and Ben Youngs (Leicester Tigers).

Gloucester, with six representatives, supply the largest contingent of players. Four come from clubs outside the Premiership, three from Leeds Carnegie and one - prop Ben Moon - from Exeter.

Not suprised Ovens got called up, he looked good for Bath in the couple of EDF games he played.

Nice to see Tonks back from injury.

Not suprised Homer is in either after his debut but that's bad luck for Stanley. He was named in the U20's last season & had to pull out due to injury then.

Clark appointed England Under 20 captain

Leeds Carnegie's Calum Clark has been named captain of England's Under 20 side.

The flanker will lead the side into the RBS Under 20 Six Nations tournament, which kicks off against Italy at Worcester on Friday, February 6 (8pm).

England are the title holders after completing a Grand Slam at this level last season.

Clark follows in the footsteps of Hugo Ellis (London Wasps), who led the team to last year's Junior World Championship final, and Danny Care (Harlequins), who captained them in 2007.

"Calum's a very committed individual who will lead from the front and who all our players will look up to,"
said coach Mark Mapletoft.

"He's got a lot of experience in age-group international sides, in the Guinness Premiership and National One with Leeds and was an important part of the Under 20 team last year.

"I've worked with him over the last three or four years and he has embraced the style of game we aspire to. He's a very constructive person who gets the message across and will set the standard for the way we want to play."

Clark became the youngest forward to appear in the Guinness Premiership when he made his debut for Leeds against Saracens on September 30, 2007 at the age of 18 years and 112 days.

He has represented England at Under 16, 18 and 20 levels, making four appearances at last year's IRB Junior World Championship in Wales where England were beaten by New Zealand in the final.

He also played at Barnard Castle, the County Durham school that has produced senior England internationals in Rob Andrew, Rory and Tony Underwood and Mathew Tait.

"It was a bit of a surprise but I'm delighted to have been handed the responsibility of leading the side," said Clark.

"I'll just go out and play the way I always play. I hope the rest of the players respond to that and give everything they've got.

"Our ambition has to be to go out and win the Six Nations again and then we'll be out to emulate the standards and performances of last year's team when we go to the Junior World Championship in Japan."

England have been training at the National Sports Centre at Bisham Abbey before moving to Worcester next Monday.

Additional players working with the squad this week are hooker Arthur Ellis and lock Peter Elder, both from London Wasps.

They have been standing in for Leicester's injured hooker Tom Collett and Northampton Saints lock Courtney Lawes, who is training with his club's first team squad.

Also missing is Sale Sharks flanker Carl Fearns, who will be out of action for six to eight weeks after breaking his wrist in last weekend's Heineken Cup game against Clermont Auvergne.

Ah...so Fearns is injured like last year. Pity.

Clarlk is an interesting choice, particularly as he got sent off in the U20 final for a headbutt. Will he play for Leeds if there's a clash of games?
