The 76,000 all-seater home of Premier League champions Manchester United will host England and the Pumas on Saturday, June 6 (4pm kick-off) with the second Test in Argentina on Saturday, June 13 (venue to be confirmed).

In partnership with Manchester City Council and the Northwest Regional Agency (NWDA), the Rugby Football Union are taking an England international to Manchester for the first time since 1997.

RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron said:
"We received a request from the Argentinean Rugby Union to play one of the tests in England to generate funds to invest in their squads.

"We are delighted to have been able to help them by securing Old Trafford, one of the most famous football stadiums in the world, and our thanks go to Manchester City Council, the NWDA and Old Trafford itself.

"Rugby Union is thriving in the North West and this is a great opportunity for us to play a match away from Twickenham and aid the development of the game in the region. Tickets will be competitively priced and we are looking forward to a great occasion."

Ricardo GarcÃ-a Fernández, Chairman of the Professional Rugby Board of the Union Argentina de Rugby, said:
"We are really happy with the agreement with the Rugby Football Union to play the first Test match in Manchester. Those extra funds we will get for playing there allow us to continue investing in our local development programmes.

"Regarding the second Test to be played on June 13 in Argentina, we will know the venue at the end of February after having concluded the diligences with those local unions that have applied for hosting this Test match."

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure at Manchester City Council, said:
"Manchester is proud to be hosting an England international, the first to have been staged outside of the capital for over a decade. This yet again reinforces our position as a world-class destination for sport.

"Manchester City Council has worked hard to help secure this event which underlines our commitment to bringing major sports events to the City. We hope this is just the start and we will continue to bring international rugby matches to Manchester in the future.

"This opportunity has allowed us to strengthen our links with the RFU, with whom we're already working with, to develop the sport across the City. This event will help us to support local schools, clubs and communities to get involved in rugby activities whilst enjoying world class rugby on our doorstep."

Peter Mearns, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications at the NWDA, added:
"Securing this match between two world class teams is a fantastic coup for Manchester. Sport makes a huge contribution to our regional economy and we expect tens of thousands of fans to head to Manchester in June. We are pleased to have been involved in bringing such a high-profile event to the region."

Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill said: "We are delighted that Old Trafford has been chosen to host this international fixture. It underlines the stadium as one of the premier venues in world sport and we look forward to welcoming both teams to the Theatre of Dreams."

Ticketing details will be available in due course.

Miracolo !!!

Yes there really IS a God in heaven.

Wonder if Barney will be up there waving his debenture card and telling the locals how wonderful Twickenham is?

I very much doubt it whingebasher, as this is not an England home game in the first place.

It is in fact an Argentina "home" test match that they have sacrificed to play in England in order to generate much needed funds for the Argentinian Rugby Union.

England were due to play 2 tests in Argentina this summer but will now only play one there because the Manchester game becomes the first game of the 2 test series.

Since when were the Falklands part of the British Isles? I'd say let them have Manchester.

1833. (BUT to observe the blindingly obvious and pre empt any further hair splitting, if indeed that is possible, EACH Falkland Isle is in fact NOT part of the British Isles. It is a part of the Falkland Islands.

Youd need a lot of 40foot containers to get Manchester down to S America. You could put it in the Tierra Del Fuego. Lots of space down there. You might just throw Stockport and Salford in for free.

Bargain basement.

Greater Manchester unofficially became part of Argentina shortly after both Nacho and Corcho came to play for Sale Sharks: they have a lot of supporters round here!(Sm152)

Best atmosphere I have ever experienced was England against the all Blacks at Old Trafford a few years back.
The ground was full of real rugby fans, rather than the corporate "day outers" Twickenham sold it's soul for.

Don't tempt fate Leipy!
You're setting up our beloved RA to say something like "Argentina have as much chance of winning the next world cup, as Italy have of beating England this week-end "(Sm22)(Sm14)

Copied from the Sharks board, but of general interest I'd say.

Very clever move by the RFU, very clever. The link up with the City Council to get the game played in schools far more will hit any idea Salford City Reds had of tapping the Manchester market very hard. The SL Grand Final is there every October, but as it's only broadcast live on SKY it doesn't get the TV audience.

Judging by the 4pm kick off time, will this be on SKY as a double bill followed by Super League, or will it be on terrestrial?

Biggest Great Britain league crowd at OT is 50,583 from 1986 so that's your target for the biggest international rugby crowd. You'll have to top 73,700 for the biggest ever rugby crowd though

Cheese and Chili.

Nacho = Carlos Ignacio Fernández Lobbe, a very macho nacho if ever there was one, having played in the past 3 world cups helping to elevate Argentina to 4th in merit tables ( we're 6th!)

whingebasher, my point is that as it is not an England home game, there is no obligation to play the game at Twickenham or to compensate the Twickenham debenture holders if/when the game is not played there.

Barney's point (if I remember correctly) was always that England home games should remain at Twickenham.

This is not an England home game, despite it being played in England, just as it wasn't an England home game when Wales played us at Wembley while the Millennium Stadium was being built.

There was a great atmosphere, even though we lost 25 - 8.

If that wasnt bad enough then worse was to come. In spite of losing by 17 points they still insisted on doing a lap of honour...(Was it to the strains of Land of Hope and Glory?)

I was with 2 friends from NZ.
I have never ever been so embarrased at a rugby game in my life.

What on earth was going through the players minds??

It's easy to take the pi55 out of that "lap of honour" - as the All Blacks understandably did - but all they were doing was showing their appreciation for the great support.

It was also very easy to show their appreciation for the support by making complete tw@ts of themselves.

Not even Buster Keaton could have come up w that one.

Wasn't that game a draw?

I only hope a few more turn up than bothered to go to Edgeley Park for the A game last Friday (sub 4,000?) which would have attracted over double anywhere else.

The second Test at wickenham was a draw. Very good game in spite of being way behind at half time NZ drew the game.
