Rugby World Cup Limited (RWCL) has officially launched Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 with players from six of the nations who will be competing in the showpiece tournament of the Women's Game present at Twickenham on Monday.

Following the announcement of the pools for the tournament, which will run from August 20 to September 5 in London, the match schedule and venues have now also been confirmed.

The Final will be played at Twickenham Stoop, along with the semi finals and bronze final with all other matches played at Surrey Sports Park, a new multi-sport facility which will host all 12 teams for the duration of the tournament.

Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 may be nine months away, but the official tournament website - www.rwcwomens.com - has now gone live and will provide news, features, statistics and player information in the build up to and during the event.

"It is particularly exciting to be launching Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 at a time when Women's Rugby is experiencing unprecedented growth and interest throughout the world and of course here in England," said Mike Miller, RWCL Managing Director.

"This year has been an historic one for Women's Rugby. Olympic Games inclusion will ensure that the sport has a profile around the world like never before, providing an exciting catalyst for further growth and development while reaching out to new audiences."

Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 will feature a host of innovative strategies aimed at leaving a lasting legacy for the Women's Game in England, including a ticketing policy which links the tournament to Rugby World Cup 2015. For the first time ever, tickets for a Women's Rugby World Cup will be available exclusively through Ticketmaster.

Rugby World Cup Limited is also delighted to announce that Sky Sports will be the host broadcaster for the sixth edition of Women's Rugby World Cup and have committed to broadcast live a minimum of seven matches.

"Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 in London is a marvellous opportunity to raise the profile of the Women's Game in England. Women's Rugby is a rapidly growing sport but to have the showcase event on English soil will undoubtedly help raise the profile of the sport and get more people into the game, and we have a range of legacy programmes designed to achieve just that," said Rugby Football Union Chairman Martyn Thomas.

"It will be an outstanding event. We have got some fantastic partners in Sky, Surrey Sports Park, Harlequins and Ticketmaster who I know will all help us deliver a successful and well attended WRWC 2010. With RWC 2015 in England also just around the corner rugby fans have got a lot to be excited about."

A legacy programme is an integral part of all IRB tournaments, and in the case of the WRWC 2010 the appointment of 12 officers tasked with the delivery of 30 projects nationwide is an exciting development aimed at increasing awareness and participation in Women's Rugby.

"The inaugural Women's Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai raised the bar for the Women's Game, setting a high standard of competition and providing fans with exciting matches and unearthing new stars," said IRB Women's Development Manager Susan Carty.

"We now have a wonderful opportunity to take the Game to a new level with the tournament here in England. I have no doubt Women's Rugby World Cup 2010 will further highlight the huge strides that have been, and will continue to be, made in the Women's Game."

The Rugby Football Union for Women (RFUW) has welcomed the findings of the Commission on the Future of Women’s Sport and believes it is an important step forward in helping increase commercial investment in this growing sector.

Women's rugby is enjoying unprecedented growth in England. There are currently nearly 14,000 women and girls playing the game including 8000 youth registered players which highlights the massive growth in girls playing the game. To date there are also 300 women and girls clubs in England, and over 500 teams playing regularly.

This summer heralds a significant opportunity for the game of women’s rugby. From August 20th to September 5th England will host the Women’s Rugby World Cup in South West London, and the showcase tournament is already set to smash previous records.

The tournament will be held at the impressive multi million pound facility of Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, which will provide not only a fantastic venue for the pool games but also a world cup village where the athletes will be located for three weeks. The semi finals and the final will then be staged at the 14,200 seater Twickenham Stoop stadium.

There will be unprecedented live television coverage of the tournament in the UK with Sky Sports broadcasting over ten games,
while interest in the tournament in the host country has already reached an all time high.

England are heading into this tournament in their best form yet. The host nation has won five consecutive RBS 6 Nations titles, including a fourth grand slam this season. They also recorded their first win in eight years over world champions, New Zealand who undoubtedly will be one of their biggest rivals for world cup glory this season.

The RFUW is certainly confident that following this summer’s WRWC the tournament will leave a long term and lasting legacy. 11 months into the RFUW’s World Cup Legacy Programme, targets have already been smashed. To date there have been 28 projects and an impressive 1820 participants taking part or volunteering.

Rosie Williams, Managing Director of the Rugby Football Union for Women, said: “The WRWC represents a landmark event for the game of women’s rugby, and it promises to be a memorable and successful tournament. It will also represent a true celebration of the strength and stature of the women’s game. It is great to see enlightened brands such as Heineken and Sky backing the tournament.

“However, the tournament is not just about the three weeks of rugby, but spreading the word, and creating a lasting legacy for the women’s game. And we are confident we can do this. The sport is already thriving, and the England team are showcasing our achievements on the field.
