England Saxons put in an excellent performance against Canada to win the 2010 Churchill Cup

England Saxons 38 - 18 Canada

The England Saxons put in a tremendous performance winning the Churchill Cup for the fifth time.  Their display was even more remarkable when you factor in the severe heat they played under.  Thankfully they had 20 mins water breaks.

The first 10mins of the first half the Saxons just ripped into Canada but fair dues Canada never gave up and came very close at half time to almost drawing 3points adrift but failed to do so and the Saxons went in with a comfortable lead  23-15 lead at half time.

The second half was similar but the Saxons management had asked for more intensity and that is what they got.  Again the Canadians would not lie down though and fought to the end.

Player of the tournament was Nick Abendanon who in my opinion should be with the England Elite squad.

Nick's comments and Man of the Match Luck Narroway below:-

Player of the tournament - Nick Abendanon (Bath Rugby)

"Our willingness to hold onto the ball and our enthusiasm got us through today. Playing at wing wasn't really a problem for me and I was quite happy with my performance but I think I will stay at full back.

"Stuart Lancaster has done a fantastic job and put a structure in place that lets us express ourselves and show off our talent. If you look at the squad there are a lot of guys with pace and we want to get the ball out wide and we had a game plan in place to do that.

"Andy Farrell has come in to work with the backs and it's worked. As a squad we are much fitter than we were last year, plus we have come straight from the Premiership this season into the Churchill Cup so we are all still game ready. For us to come here and win the Churchill Cup is a massive achievement."

Man of the match - Luke Narraway (Gloucester Rugby)

"This is my third Churchill Cup and my first final win. Last year against Ireland A we had a similar talented squad but something obviously didn't work. Full credit to the lads, they have worked hard and we played some exciting football and it was great to be a part of it.

"We took the foot off the pedal but all credit to Canada they are a real good side. They came back at us but we had enough talent and energy in the tank to win the game."

ENGLAND SAXONS Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said, "It's a fantastic achievement. Three weeks ago we met in a Heathrow hotel with disappointed players not making the senior tour and young players who came in straight from the Premiership and collectively to put all that together and form a team is great, I'm really proud.

"I'd like to think that the players have enjoyed it. They're working with different players and different coaches and learning different ways to play. That's what international rugby is all about, we want to make sure these players have enough room to grow and develop so when they make the step to the senior stage they're ready."
